Van hire company trying it on?

julianf (Elite) posted this on Monday, 7th January 2008, 10:38

I`ve just received an invoice from an online vehicle hire firm regarding a van I hired in November 2006 trying to charge me the £75 excess for damage caused during its use. The online firm is just an agent I used to book on t`internet and the vehicle-owners are a local firm.

I`ve argued that surely 13 months is simply too long to be able to charge me...(reasonable time etc). The agent is questioning the invoice with the local firm and getting back to me (she seems onside and said they may just have to swallow it). I don`t recall any damage being caused at the time and wasn`t informed at the time I would be charged either.

I`ve a good mind to tell them it`s tough and I`m not paying it.

Go down after a shift, while still in uniform, and query it in person.

You need to ask them for dated documentation of when the damage was noted. Without that they can do nothing. I would say they have left it to late anyway..

They clearly love a man in uniform...

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

I`m always a right stickler when it comes to collecting a hire car/van.
I`ll often add stuff to that little `damage diagram` they make you fill in?
Phone photos are a good idea too, and very easily done.

Mind you, I know of some people who take the p***.
They`ll pay all the insurances, then return the car in a right state.
I know of one ex-bike racer, turned BBC commentator, who was jumping his hire-car off a pier, onto a beach. :D

Finally, a perk of being a copper! Must make up for all the cold shoulders etc that come from some directions.

It was the logical result of course, but no doubt speeded up by your appearance! ;)

Wonder if it was a genuine error or whether that firm should be avoided in the future. :/

It`s the hire companies duty to inspect the vehicle on return. Tough titty to them if they didn`t notice it at the time.
