parenting advice wanted please my 3yr old.............

hi there, got a little 3.5yr old boy who at the moment seems to be having a few accidents in his pants.
no probs with the number twos but for some reason over he does not seem to be too bothered taking a pee in his pants, its quite all over the place realy he can go one or two days fine then do it 3 or 4 times in a day.
the problem is we are not sure how to deal with it, and worse both me and the wife have diffrence of opinions on how to handle it,
so any advice or tips would be appreciated

Electric shock collar.

no, wait. that`s dogs....

Seriously. Cold weather may be a factor. Have you had another child recently? And don`t forget that he just might not be ready to take total control of himself.

My little girl is only 20mths, so we haven`t hit the horrors of potty training yet. But I find the BBC parenting forum has been a lifesaver, it might be worth posting your query there.

Was he already trained, and gone back? And do you use proper pants or pullup type things? If he was perfectly trained before, might be worth checking for bladder infections and things like that.

Asked the goodlady.... many many years experience with small children... nursey nurse etc...... plus we have 3 young children.... 2 girls and a boy.... the lad... god bless him has been very typical of this....

1) It could just be that boys can be slower..... they do develop slower.... easily distracted etc....

2) Perhaps a reward system... concentrate on positive not negative... rewards for being dry.... etc......

3)Not all kids are text book.... they are all different...... a simple changes in his daily routine could have effected him........

4)Is he drinking more on the days he has accidents.... gentle reminders evry so often may help......

It sounds more likely to be a lazy boy type issue than a bladder infection... if it was an infection surely it would be constant....

On a plus point... look back at this post in 6 months and wonder what you were worrying about..... :D

Reward system is very good. We used it with our little girl (Now 4). She got a star (you can get sticky stars) for every day he was dry and when she got 7 stars (1week) she got a gift. I think it took about 3/4 weeks and she was dry and going on the toilet. She only used the pot for about 3 days.

Good luck

It doesn`t appear to be the case with anyone on here but in our experience people do,for some reason, try and rush their kids into doing away with nappies/pull up pants.
I feel it puts them under completely unnecessary pressure when it may be that they simply aren`t ready.
For example, friends of ours pressured their son into ditching pull-up pants when he clearly wasn`t ready, resulting in umpteen accidents a day.
Ou daughter was still in pull-up pants at the same age,so why the hell they felt their son should be forced to give them up was beyond us. :/
What was their rush ? :/
Our daughter told us when she was ready,a few months after this poor boy was pressured into it.
She just turned round and said she didn`t want to wear them anymore.
The result has been that she hasn`t wet herself once.

I do wish some parents would stop this `race` to have their kids off dummies/nappies etc.before they`re ready.
They`ll turn out the same in the end,so why the hell pressure them ? >:(

you have to ask him (unfortunately) every 10 minutes if he needs a wee.

When he does realise he needs it take him to the loo and reward him for weeing on the bog.

Do this for a week :D

I know theres more to it than that but it worked really well for our daughter who is 2 and hates wearing nappies now.

And be ready to visit every single toilet in the world once they get the hang of it. We had to ask to use just about every place going, including Natwest when I was trying to remortgage and he just had to go. :D

Can he reach the rim of the toilet? An extra motivation for my son was that he wanted to `wee like daddy` (i.e. standing up, not necessarily splashing the floor/seat/whatever ;) ) Has he seen you go to the loo? You might want to broadcast to the family that you`re going for a slash, so it might trigger him off too.
