Police - obscene images....I know I did the right thing but....

I pick up the odd PC tower from the local council tip....they often have good useable parts in and spare hard drives etc...

I got a P4 one a few sundays back and it wouldn`t boot up (power supply problems) but had 2 hard drives in so I took them out.

Yesterday, I put one of the hard drives in my pc and it had all the peoples info, where they live, photos etc so I thought I would put all the photos on a CD and mail it to them.

I then put the other drive in and started copying across the photos, as I went through each folder, in the all users one was shared photos, so I clicked on it and there was a load of obscene images of young boys on it!!!

I just could not believe what I was looking at, and I`m still a bit shocked now.

Anyway, I did what I thought was the right thing to do and took the hard drive straight to the police station. The desk bloke just took some info and that was it.

Then I got home and remembered I had the other drive ( but hadn`t seen any images on it) so figured I should take that in too in case it had any other evidence. The desk guy seemed really unconcerned about the whole thing and I left the police station wondering what would happen next.

I thought they took this kind of thing really seriously.

I had more or less handed them on a plate the evidence to convict someone of downloading child pornography.

The other thing is, I know all about the people, where they live, that it`s a mum, dad and two teenage daughters, that the dad is a diplomat!!

I still can`t quite believe what I saw...

why take life so seriously..its not like you are going to make it out alive

Well if that is the case then I`m sure it`ll be swept under the carpet and forgotton about. You should have given the hard drive to `The Sun` :o

Well played. You definitely did the right thing.

Don`t mistake the Front Office staff`s manner for indifference. I don`t know where you live but our guys are civil staff, not police officers, and basically take initial details, reports etc to pass on for investigation. They do this all day every day. Also, in my experience, the department responsible for analysing computers and their data is very, very busy so there will likely be a delay before they get to have a look (it`s annoying when you know you could do it yourself but there are procedures that need to be followed if the stuff found is to have any evidential value).

As far as ever finding out what happened - given that you are the Reporting Person and not the Victim, and given the type of offence, I wouldn`t hold my breathe regarding being told what happened about it all. I might be wrong on that though but in one way "what`s it got to do with you?" for want of a better expression (no offence - don`t get me wrong).

But well done again.

what Julian said - I`m a civilian Police employee and any "indecent image" investigations do take alot of time to process.

The incident will probably be dealt with by someone in CID, but the hard drives will be interrogated by a specialist department (for us they are known as the "High Tech Crime Unit"), but due to the sheer amount of computer based crime that goes on these days there are inevitable delays.

No doubt the Police will be in touch with you to find out more about the circumstances of how you came into possession of the computer. You`ve definitely done the right thing - I just hope that they follow up on this and catch the bloke.

Companies that have p**sed me off so much that I will never use them again and I hope you dont either....
Jacks Fish & Chips of Cambridge ridiculously overpriced and overpackaged chips. £1.20 for a stupidly small portion of chips - they need to go up north for a good lesson in fish and chips
Alloy Bodies of Manchester - The Grand Daddy & Benchmark for shockingly poor customer service.
Capital Bank Leasing who are part of [B]BOS
& are f**ing useless & struggle to action the smallest request but are fantastically efficient at taking money out of my account
[B]Abbey National
Absolutely diabolical service - how hard is it to change £60 of coins into notes????
....more coming soon no doubt.....

Agree with everyone on here.

Ignore the desk bloke, don`t forget all you actually gave him were a couple of bits of metal, obviously you have seen the images which are imprinted into your mind which makes what you are giving him more meaning to you, (if that makes sense).

I`m sure they get weirdo`s coming in giving them stuff from time to time and also people trying to set people up so maybe it`s just the same old, same old to them.

The worst thing is the justice system will probably do nothing of significance to the f***er. Hope he`s named and shamed, I really couldn`t give two s***s that he`s got a family.

Ian Huntley and the rest of the bastards had families aswell, which were probably ruined by what they did, but that is their fault not anyones else`s.
