With 550 passengers, a Gym, Restaurant, Bar, Double Bedrooms and a Duty Free shop.

I`m not sure if I`d feel that safe!

I work in the air travel / freight industry.
I`ve already heard rumours that airlines are considering selling off space on board these aircraft to the likes of McDonalds....

:/

Or tear out all the fancy stuff (u didn`t mention the Casino NCH........tut, tut) and you`ve got space for 900 passengers. Must generate a lot of waste eh !
Would I like to fly in it ? That`s a definite no. The test flight is in March btw so it might not even get off the ground.

Spruce Goose anyone?!

With an aeroplane that size, won`t most airports be unable to cope with it`s runway demands and so it`s flights will be limited to between Heathrow, JFK, LAX etc.?

I bet the Government will (if it`s a success) come under pressure from smaller airports to increase their runways and destroy even more of the greenbelt.

Bloke from BAA interviewed on Working Lunch admitted that Heathrow was the only UK airport that could handle it at present, although Stansted could take it in an emergency.

£450million per airport needs to be spent to land elsewhere !

I work for Airbus where we manufacture the wings. It`s f***in` huge!
Some comments above are a bit naive..
Do you really think we would have spent the billions on it (not just research and development and manufacture but market research and massive customer involvement) if it was really another Spruce Goose.
For information all main airports have slots of a certain width and length. This aircraft from day one on the drawing board could have a wingspan and length of no more than 80m to ensure it would fit in present bays. Some airports are making further changes to give even quicker turnarounds.
Airports are clamouring to ensure any modifications they need to make are made because this kind of air travel is the future. Hub and spoke... (mass transport to main destinations and smaller aircraft for onward journeys.
Airbus is now the number one aircraft manufacturer in the world (not Boeing anymore!!)

Ste

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

I agree with sj on this on, I remember reading comments like the one`s above when the original Jumbo came out 35 years ago and that plane hasn`t looked back since. Anyway any plane that has a McD`s on board has my custom ;)

I thought that spruce goose did fly? Okay, not very far, but it flew. Anyhow, airbus have admitted that at the moment the A380 is about 3tones overweight!

I am definately looking forward to it, i much prefer airbus jets to boeing, and whilst it will have to fly to `hub` airports, most of the smaller jets do that now anyway. Plus there will be the bonus of the extra facilities on board, whilst the gyms etc may be limited to those in first class, the majority will at least get some shops to wander around, and maybe even get to buy their meal from a take-away style store rather than being fed off a trolley. And as Richard Branson said, with double beds and a casino on board, you should be able to get lucky one way or another :-D

It only flew once as as well.
