Children in need.

The original 42pcenter MD (Elite) posted this on Friday, 19th November 2004, 11:51

Just a thought. How much does it cost to set the night up. All the outside broadcasts, the months of planning, the sets the info packs, the costumes, the pay for hundreds of employes how work round the year on this? Do they raise more than is spent?

I will pledge £10 if I don`t get some dressed up muppet asking me for money in the pub tonight. Sorry, but you are a compleat stranger asking me for money in the pub. Any other night of the year I would tell you to f*** off. Where is your badge? Tonight will be no different. Chilldren in need or not. F*** off.

All the best,

The 42%er.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

Last year they raised about 13 million quid I think. That is a lot more than the cost of running the event, which I think is paid for by the BBC (i.e. you and me from our licence fee). The performers etc. (including the Wogan) do it for nothing.

It`s a good cause, but best to just contribute a bit and keep away from the neverending "and now over to a nonentity for an update on how things are going in Lower Codswallop..." on telly all night!

Always viewed Children in Need as nothing more than really bad TV. :)

Probably in the minority here, but usually watch it as like to see "serious" people like newsreaders making complete asses of themselves. Don`t think I`ll be glued to the TV all night though. This year I think Fiona Bruce, Sophie Raworth and Natasha Kaplinsky are doing a send up of Bananarama. Anyway, as the BBC Wales bit is coming from my local town, will have to give it a go.

Just about the funniest line I`ve heard on the pitiful children in need just now

Gobby Roslin to Donny Osmond:-

"I`ve seen you plugging children in need..."

everyone that contributes their `talent` to CIN does so without financial compensation. Apart from the electric/gas etc.

and the TV license payers, natch, who also `contribute`

Twonking BBC filmed in work today, they had camera on me walking down the corridor... I nearly did a bjork on them and slapped. >:( I didn`t dress up, I didn`t sponsor anyone... but I did enter a few raffles, didn`t wanna look a total tight ass!
It`s just an excuse for celebs to get their faces on tv. Pishes me off.

It makes me sick to think that in this day and age in this country we STILL have children in need, it`s about time the powers that be spent our money in the right places to put an end to it. Sorry to go on.

Precisely. Spot on.
Also other charities suffer badly when these do-gooder marathon things are on, usually the smaller, less vocal ones. Then we have the "charity burn-out" phenomena.
I remember Derek Jarman once said "having to accept charity from people who just don`t care".
