MG ZS 120 or Astra 1.8 SRI

tutchy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 21st July 2003, 22:03

I may be mad and I know everyone can recommend a car but I have narrowed it down to 2 but am undecided which, 8) I prefer the looks of the MG to the Astra but the Astra gets a better write up.
Are you an owner of either able to comment or reccomend !! or just someone who has an opinion as to which has the better street cred

Any comments welcome

Thanks

Is it the new Astra you`re buying? (not sure if it`s even out yet...)

If it`s not then you`re likely to lose even more money in depreciation. Doesn`t really answer your question but it`s worth considering.

I have the Astra Sport(T99), I`ve had no trouble from it in the 3 years I`ve owned it. (although I`ve only done 21k miles in it! :) ). The main reason I bought it was for the low insurance group and the cheap upkeep.

The MG is a nice drive! Took my boss upto Scotland couple of days ago in the company motor. Id suggest going to Vauxhall and Rover, test drive the motor`s and find out what package either one of them are offering...... Play them off againsed each other and see who gives you the best value! There are some good savings to be made if you have the cheek!

They both depreciate quite badly - but the MG even worse so. I think the MG would be more fun, as I have a friend who has an Astra SRI (1.6) and its, well, quite boring....
On the other end of the scale you could always buy my car! Its a Renaultsport Clio 172 - I have put an ad on the Trading forum (sorry about posting this, but I just wanted to advertise my car more! and the price has gone down to £6,795)

Didn`t realise you could get a 1.6 SRi. Thought they started at 1.8.

A pocket rocket Clio sounds great however 2 problems

1. french cars are unrealiable see auto express driver power survey
2. I am married with 2 kids hence it needs to be able to get us all in plus luggage
3. I am only able to afford insure up to group 12 as I live near london otherwise I would of considered the Octavia RS and the MG 180 ZS

Thanks to everyone for there input so far I have had a barter today with my local MG garage and they are offering a 52 plate metalic silver 120 with air con and upgraded Monaco interior for £9895 with delivery milage only. I will ponder this for a day or so but it seems a good deal and its a nice looking car particually with the Monaco leather interior.

Cheers
