Try the simple things first like disk clean up and defragmenting your hard drive both can be done by clicking on start then programs then Accessories then system tools .

If you are a complete novice you are better getting someone who knows what they are doing to look at it because it won`t take you long to get to the "format c" stage.

If you realy want to try and fix it yourself you will need to give us some more info, spec of machine, when did it happen, suddenly or over a few weeks/ months, after a wierd message when you were on the internet or even something like it started after I installed Norton utils that my mate lent me (he forgot to tell you it was a beta version!)

IMHO The usual suspects are utilities and programmes like MS Office, Norton utilities, Easy CD, Direct CD , hundreds of shortcuts on the desktop etc.
System utilities that run in the background can have a noticable effect on the speed of a system, depending on the spec of your system ie more memory + faster CPU makes the slow down less noticable.
Try pressing CTRL ALT and Delete at the same time and close down everything other than Explorer and Systray. It might surprise you what is running in the background. Individually they might not cause a noticable slow down but when there are several running at the same time they take up quite a bit of your systems resources.
JMHO folks :-)
