Star Trek Movies Special/Director Editions (Region 1 or Region 2) differences?

Skeeter (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 12th March 2005, 23:45

With The Motion Picture Special Edition/Directors Cut, being only a fiver now at play.com i was thinking of getting it but i noticed in a reviewer on amazon saying the picture is better on region 1. Is there any truth to this? And whats the differences between the two region version.

Same question more or less for Wrath of Khan as i fancy treating myself as its my birthday on 22nd this month. :)

Go on then, if you know, tell me about the other ST Movies Special Edition/Director Cuts with the differences between region versions as i will get them all eventually. :)

There are no differences between the region releases for a change, they all have the exact same spec apart from some minor audio and subtitle differences, for a complete list check www.dvdcompare.net

I originally bought Star Trek The Motion Picture on Region 1 but sold it on sometime ago and bought the Region 2 release and as far as I could tell they looked exactly the same, the big difference is the packaging, the R1 releases come in rather large double disc cases while the R2 releases come in standard silver double disc amaray case with a cardboard slipcase.

The region one release is in an Alpha case, which has those retention clips from hell (responsible for many a near-broken disc).

The main difference is that the R2 sets are a rip off and have a RRP of £24.99 and even PLAY charge £17.99,while the R1 sets (like the new First Contact) are available from online stores for £9.99

As i said above in my first post. The ST1 Special Edition is going for £5.99 at www.play.com and some sites like CDWOW and Choices Direct have some of the other films SpecialEditions going for £6.99 or near that amount. So there really cheap these days .

Yep, the Region 1 releases might be cheap on release but the Region 2 releases quickly drop in price, right now you can pick up most of the 2 Disc SE for under £8.00 and even Generations is available for under £10 if you use discount links/vouchers at CDWow.

I got the 1st one cos its real cheap. But the one i was hoping to get soon is the Directors cut of Wrath of Khan. I love the battle sequence in the nebula and the cat and mouse game they play against each other and also the cool miranda class ship :)

I heard it had not much added to it except a few lines of script and possiblty a scene or two. The Motion Picture was said to have alot done to it and the part i hope for to be redone is the wormhole sequence which sucked i thought. I think it was redone so im looking forward to that :) and the 5.1 surround. Just hope the back speakers gets some use out of the mix.

The Motion Picture did have alot of work done to it including a number of CGI shots of the Enterprise and Vyger but it still has some scenes missing which were in the TV cut of the film but those scenes are in the Deleted Scenes section.

Wraith of Khan is also a Directors Edition but it hasent had any CGI shots created but there are several new scenes which I have never seen before, some applies to The Undiscovered Country, several scenes have been tweaked so even though its only classed as a Special Edition it is a different cut of the film.

ST-TMP is the only one with significant differences because it was rushed into the cinemas in 1979 in an incomplete version.
As the director comments on the disc, many effects sequences were left in a bit of a rough state simply because they ran out of time.
Paramount graciously allowed the movie to be finished in a director approved version
