DVD`s that will not play in certain players - Is this an accepted norm??

Hi

I have just been reading the area450.co.uk website (much better design and easier to read btw ) I noticed on the site a section that shows there are number of movies such as:

What Lies Beneath
Billy Elliot
The Trueman Show

That dont play on certain players, for example the WhafedaleM5.

This seems really odd to me, (and must surely be really anoying especially if the problem only develops half way through the film!?)

Can I ask is this typical of all players?. What do you do, just send the film back?.

RE: Wharfdale M5 sorted now??

Are these things cheaper at different stores? whats the cheapest people are paying for the M5?.

RE: Guys need help with Macrovision...Sonel MacMaster!!!!!!!!

The sonel website looks a little odd to me.

Site looks like it was done by an 8 yr old. and the postal address looks like a house address. (no 4 kestrel avenue !!!)

It`s probably some school kid enterpreneur!!

RE: which of these £200 player to get

Anyone have one of these external removers?, do they work well?

RE: 36

Damn, wrong answer. And i had just about convinced myself that the larger screen is the most essential part.

I`ll let you know what i opted for, when i `eventually` make a purchase.

thanks for your help

RE: Possible Star Wars dvd specs?????

I totally agree, a terrible film.

And what hell were they thinking using that shiny silver space craft!!!!!!

RE: which of these £200 player to get

Problem if i buy the whalfdale m5 from tescos, is i will then have to send it to techtronics to have the macrovision disabled, which will in the end cost me more than the toshiba210 from them.

Is this really a better machine than the tosh 210 ????

RE: 36

Exactly, thats what i saw on the toshiba website, it links to DPL.
You would think they would get it right on there own website wouldn`t you !?!

Clayt out of interest given my choice of spending £1500 (to include both screen adn sound) which would you choose:

1) All in one DD toshiba 36" tv?, or
2) Separate amp and speakers `but` with a smaller sony 32" nicam ??.

36

As you say there is virtual` or `psuedo` (this is the philips 36" which first made me aware of checking details).

I dont want to pay out for a 36" to then find i have to fork out for an amp and 6 speakers. I am worried about getting a tv which turns out NOT to be TRUE DD 5.1 , speaking to the guy in currys he was telling me they were all DD 5.1 which i know isn`t right, he was just telling me what i wanted to hear.

For example the toshiba i am thinking of is supposed to be true 5.1.
http://www.hello.toshiba.co.uk/products/html/36zp18p.html

Can someone tell me a way to truely tell if a Tv is true 5.1, clayts can you tell me the logo i need to watch for?. Whats else on the set itself can i look for??.

many thanks your advice is invaluable

ps. price, cheapest I found it was £1499(my limit) (most are £1699) which i thought was good. I was origonally going to buy a 32" sony nicam then an amp and speakers which took it up to that price anyway.

Unfortunately ive now been unable to find this price again and think this was on electricalwarehouse.co.uk but the site is now down!, i hope they havent gone bust!!!

RE: wanted multi regionand macro diabled dvd

do richer sounds do chipped dvd players?

RE: Would you consider a Projection Tv ?

projection ruled out then.

Ive today been looking at the new 36" toshiba tv, the currys guy "claimed" it to be 5.1 dolby digital , i dont suppose anyone knows anything about this and whether it really is 5.1 ??.

RE: which of these £200 player to get

hadnt noticed the Whafedale M5, i will take a look at this.

I had planned on buying the toshiba210 chipped from techtronics ( i know techtronics have a bad review but where else is there to get chipped dvd`s!!!)

Would you consider a Projection Tv ?

Looking to buy a larger tv set.
Would anyone consider a projection tv or in your opinion is tube always the best quality?

TIA

RE: Sevenoaks Sound & Vision. What`s your view?

Shirt and tie is very off putting to people of all ages when buying consumer products.
Loose the ties and i bet your sales go up.
Look at Richard Branson. In fact i went into a BMW showroom last weekend looking at a £20k car even the staff there were not in shirt and ties.

We all have to dress formally at the office. People want to made to feel comfortable when shopping. If your customers are all weekday 9 - 5 corporate clients fair enough, but if you guys are aiming for a friendly consumer market what on earth are you thinking!!!.

Turn it around and do a study on your customers over the next 2 months, see how many of your actual customers come in wearing a shirt and ties, and then see how many of them come in dressed casually!. Then ask them what they would prefer to see you wearing!.

Its 2001, your marketing management team should be sacked!!!

which of these £200 player to get

There appears to only be 2 decent branded players for under £200 that also play cdr discs etc. (unless some knows of another, excluding rip off Scan)

1) Toshiba210
2) Pioneer340

Which of these players is the best to buy and why?

TIA

RE: Widescreen TV Question...

32" is minimum imo, wouldn`t recommend a 28" to anyone, there are now lots of 36" coming out. You can get a 32" pretty cheap now.

RE: Widescreen TV Question...

Thanks for the line about 100hz tv`s.
I was really surprised when i read comments posted by others about this and was very surprised to hear people were experiencing this.

RE: Whats essential in an amp?

£599 !! bloody hell, a little out of my price range me thinks.

I have seen one in a richersounds magazine the Pioneer A109 which is 40WPC.
I think 40wpc is quite good???? problem is it is £90 and therfore I suspect there is something wrong i.e. it wont have enough ports or it doesnt support DTS etc.

I really am a total newbie with Amps.

I am guessing that the important factors are::

1) WPC
2) Dolby and DTS support
3) Number of ports

Anything else you looked for???

RE: newbie looking for sub£200 player

The LG is your best bet LG3350 multiregion and plays cdr etc a superb machine, you can get them from Dabs too which is located close to scan.

Whats essential in an amp?

Hi
I want to buy an amp and 5 speakers to use with a tv/video/dvd player.

Can someone tell me whats the basics i should be looking of in an amp?
ie what ports do i need as a minimum.

I really know nothing about amps as i have never had one, some are £60 some £400 what`s the difference and what do i really need? Obviously I would like to spend as least a possible but £60 sounds a little too cheap to me.

Any advice v much apprecitiated

RE: Widescreen choice advice

1500+ ??
I thought you could get a full Sony 32" digital 76cm (32") Digital integrated WEGA flat widescreen with Pro Logic for approx £1150 (i.e. electricalwarehouse.co.uk etc).

BTW Do you have any idea how much the new 36" Panasonic is, im tempted to look at 36" also
Have you seen the Hitachi 36" version of the Panasonic you want?, its only approx £1399 with Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound"

Hitachi 36" :::

RE: Widescreen choice advice

Hi Samantha

I didn`t mean any disrespect and hope it was not taken that way.

Reason for my post was I thought your budget of £1200 for a TV was very high and was therefore was surprised you went for that tv set. Personally speaking if i had that much to spend I "personally" think I would have gone for a Sony.

RE: Widescreen TV Question...

Not good time to buy a WS TV.

Recommend you wait until more digital models come out then prices should come down on both digital and analogue tv`s.

RE: Widescreen choice advice

A Sharp and the old dolby prologic ??!!!!. not what i would choose

RE: 36 Advice- Please

I wanted a 36" to, until i realised I could buy 2x 32" for the price of a 36" !!!
So i bought 2 x 32" instead!!

Mark

ps. i didnt really, but it would make more sense than 1 x 36"

RE: The Ideal Retailer

The ideal retailer::

dabs.com

IMO

RE: Bad Experiences/Incompetent Retailers...name and shame time!

Both myself personally and our company had similar problems with Scan, there customer service attitude is appauling.

I would highly recommend www.dabs.com these are superb, we now buy everything from here, and it`s free delivery!!.

I have been told to go for amp and speakers

I am in exactly the same dilema at the moment.

However I have been advised not to go for the HTK but go for an amp and speakers instead.

Apparantly the HTK is ok for tv and very easy to setup and therefore designed for your very basic user.

However if you want proper performance and especially if you intend to play audio cd`s through your dvd too I have been told the amp and speaker option is a far better option.
And not necessarily a more exensive option giving the amp/speaker deals that are on at richer sounds.
