which of these £200 player to get

markster (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 9th June 2001, 16:34

There appears to only be 2 decent branded players for under £200 that also play cdr discs etc. (unless some knows of another, excluding rip off Scan)

1) Toshiba210
2) Pioneer340

Which of these players is the best to buy and why?

TIA

No knowledge of either of these DVD players but Why not try something like the Wharfedale M5, Multi-Region and MP3 playing.

Go for the Toshiba 210E. It has just received a cracking review in the new issue of What Video and TV mag.- 10/10 for picture quality

Tosh 210e = entry level player. it`s a replacement for the 100e. Also-there are no remote hacks for the Tosh in the multiregion page-which means u may have to get it chipped. Wharfedale M5-everything u want n more (inc multi region hack).

No disrespect to Toshiba, but if u do get the 210e from Techtronics-who will make it multi region n disable macro-which is all good and well-but they (tech) DO NOT show VAT-so it could workout to be more that £200.

Also- if the machine developed Firmware problems-Tech will not do anything about it as only the manufacturer`s can fix that problem and since Tech have modified the player-your 1 year`s manufacturer`s warrenty is void. I`m only telling u this because I bought an LG 3350 from Tech-mind you no problems but they can`t do anything about the firmware problem I was faced with.

If you go to www.wharfedale.co.uk and have a look at the specs of the M5-you`ll agree with many of us that it is a HELLUVA player for £180. And if any problems do arise ( well they shouldn`t really ) you can always return it to Tesco`s without the hassle you`d face from Techtronics.
Have a good one : - )

Richer Sounds are doing the 210E- multi region for £209.95. it`s actually a replacement for the 200E, not the 100E Navs; therefore not the entry level machine. Good point about the warranty though.
Tesco are now doing the Minato G1 for £109.95 delivered!

Oops!! My mistake. Sorry Hal
But when you look at the 210E, sure enough-it plays DVD,VCD,CD-R,CD-RW and MP3`s. But it only has the DD and DTS outputs.
When you look at the 200E-it has a built in Dolby digital decoder ( sadly no DTS decoding), twin trays, it plays DVD, VCD, CD-R,CD-RW and HDCD playback. Standing for High Definition Compatible Digital, HDCD is a high-quality recording system used on some special CDs and designed to reproduce more authentically the original recording conditions.
Also-the 200e gives 540 lines of resolution whereas the 210e gives only 500. So you can see how I got mixed up about the 100e and 200e.
Thanx for correcting me on that. Also-let me know where I can find specs on the Minalto G1-how does it compare with the Wharfedale M5?
Cheers Man.
Have a good one. :-)

Problem if i buy the whalfdale m5 from tescos, is i will then have to send it to techtronics to have the macrovision disabled, which will in the end cost me more than the toshiba210 from them.

Is this really a better machine than the tosh 210 ????

chipping-not true-check out www.sonel.com. External macrovision disabler for £32.00(inc. power supply, del and vat etc.). Tech only offer the "multimode plus" upgrade for certain players only ( the one`s they stock ) costing a packet. The m5 is remote hackable for multi region capability. With Tech-you`ll lose your warrenty and the chances of you actually recieving a working player from them-well-a lot of people doubt it.
For the specs of the M5, go to www.wharfedale.co.uk. Does everything the 210E does and more-with built in DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1decoders. And it will convert NTSC TO PAL 60/50 via set up menu. So the M5 and the Sonel will set you back about £210.00-without losing your warrenty.
have a good one.
