RE: Not everyone can afford dd 5.1 so prologic it will have to be!!

Connecting speakers to the line out sockets of a dvd player will not work without amplification. Ensure your dvd player has onboard amplification and speaker connectivity before you attempt this. Also Gary, you wouldn`t have another set of speakers as you simply run the tv output through your new amp, if you buy one. I agree that 5.1 is largely superior, but it all depends on the equipment. My expensive system makes ProLogic sound better than 5.1 on friends` cheaper systems. Don`t succumb to system envy, anyone slagging off a "lesser" system forgets that there`s always someone with a better one. As long as the film sounds good, and you`re happy with it, who really cares?

RE: X-Men R2 problems?

I`m with Tony on this one. Got X-Men R1 and watched it when my wife was out, thought it was okay, nice sound. Two days later my wife says, can we watch X-Men? I love my wife in a warm and fuzzy way, so I agreed. It was slightly less than okay, still good sound though. Three days after that my Mum and Stepdad came round. Mum says that Mike would like to watch X-Men. Now I don`t love him at all, just like him, but couldn`t really refuse as Mum had bought it for me as a present from their holiday in Florida. So I watched it for the third time in a five days. Fookin `ell, never has a shortish film seemed so long, good sound `n all. Now I just say X-Men? Nah, haven`t got that one.

RE: WARNING NEW STRAIN OF THE F & M VIRUS.......

But at least little Phoenix has been saved. So that in 20 months, we can eat her.

RE: Dreamworks Galaxy quest Player problems

And I thought Oscar Wilde was dead.

RE: Best Trailer

Not the best, but the most useful was What Lies Beneath, because it revealed a major plot twist from two thirds into the film, thereby saving me the effort of actually seeing the film. If only more directors were so considerate.

RE: WARNING NEW STRAIN OF THE F & M VIRUS.......

I just phoned my wife to tell her your excellent joke and she thought it was hysterical as well. Congratulations!

RE: WARNING NEW STRAIN OF THE F & M VIRUS.......

Hahaha. No, that`s really good. Really. Very damn funny. Haha. Oh, my sides have split...and my head just fell off...hahaha. Excellent. Well done. Very funny. Keep it up.

RE: What is the best gun fight/shootout in a movie ever?

Not the absolute best, but pretty good, is the end of The Way of The Gun.

RE: My first Dud DVD

Richard, I`ve not got the disc myself, but I just read a posting on another site (can`t remember which), from someone with this problem on TWINE. He said he had tried two different copies and had the same problem with each. I`ve not seen this mentioned anywhere else to date, so I wonder if it`s a player issue.

RE: Content with eye-candy?

I agree with you but, let`s face it, filmmakers aren`t gonna start casting Kathy Burke in everything just because she can act.

RE: Worst musical score or in film music

Titanic - can`t get Enya to do your score, just rip her off then. Frankenstein, the Branagh version - mediocre score not helped by being too loud in the mix. What`s that you say Baron? Can`t hear you because you appear to be standing next to a 75 piece orchestra. MI-2 - my head hurts.

RE: Best soundtrack ever ... TELL US !

Rushmore, Magnolia, Edward Scissorhands, O Brother, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.

RE: Fight Club:R1 or R2?

Of course the penis joke at the end hasn`t been removed, why would it be?

RE: Star Wars - Jedi, a religion?

Did Yoda write this? Certainly has his sentence structure.

RE: STAR WARS EP 2 TRAILER!!!!!

Why are you even wondering? If it`s legit, why hasn`t it been splashed everywhere? It`s a fake. Plus the fact that it`s accessed through a section called "FanFilms" might be a bit of a giveaway.

RE: STAR WARS EP 2 TRAILER!!!!!

Don`t bother, it`s probably the fake that was doing the rounds on video a few months back, as reported in Sight & Sound.

RE: cinemas - too expensive???

Well, my local Odeon does the whole of Tuesday for £3.50, and you can usually sit where you like unless it`s likely to be packed or very popular. What country did you say you were from?

RE: WHAT IS THE BEST 007 DVD?

Iain- Live and Let Die.

RE: Box Sets: complete picture or complete rip off?

I vote Alien and Aliens excellent, Resurrection average, 3 awful. It`s interesting that after the dreadful bish made of Alien 3, they turned to comedy with Resurrection. I think Alien 5 should be a musical.

RE: edward scissorhands r2 v r4

Yep, nunchucks, or whatever, were ex BBFC supremo James Ferman`s pet hate. He figured that they were so darned seductive when used properly that no teenage boy would be able to resist them. To back up his claims, he had a homemade pair in his desk drawer that were confiscated from some bozo on a council estate in London, which he would show to journalists who interviewed him.

RE: BBFC to blame?

Ben: I too think the BBFC are improving, especially on arthouse films. LW4 lost about 1m 30s of footage, now I have a hazy memory of this, having only seen it once, but I remember the bit with the garotting on the roof was clearly butchered, as was the montage later on, where the old triad boss, Uncle Willy or summat, gets killed. I also suspect that the final punch up lost a bit, as did the scene in the hallway when Rene gets kicked in the face. And the fight on the freeway in the house on a lorry. My overall impression was that the trims had been badly done, with the garotting scene really badly disjointed. Regards Billy E, the imdb gives a theatrical running time of 110 minutes. Can someone with a copy of the R2 dvd just confirm the actual running time from the disc itself, as I have seen someone say it`s 101 minutes, and someone else say 106. I realise it`s not important, but I have nothing else to worry about in my life, and it`s keeping me up at night! :-)

RE: O Brother Bug!

This was a problem with the review copies i believe. Momentum strike again.

RE: STAR WARS ON DVD

Well, they`re pirates aren`t they? My guess is VCD, does your player not tell you what it`s playing? As they are probably dupes of the laserdisc box set which was DD 5.1 and THX, I suppose that you might say they are both of those things. But given that they are obviously pirates, that`s a bit like saying you have the Mona Lisa at home when all you have is a postcard.

RE: why are there no decent films out in the cinemas at the moment?????

My apologies, but when you quote The Mummy Returns as the next decent film out, the phrase mindless action movie immediately springs to mind. This time of year always gets more low key releases, more arthouse and independent stuff. But yeah, I think there are a lot of good films out at the moment, but they just aren`t aimed at people who are really looking forward to The Mummy Returns. Don`t sweat it though, in summer I`ll be saying the same thing as the Odeon becomes cluttered up with blockbusting nonsense.

RE: why are there no decent films out in the cinemas at the moment?????

a) Just because you don`t like `em doesn`t mean they`re crap and b) because this time of year is always quiet for big splashy mindless action films which nowadays get released mainly in summer or before Christmas. And you can thank Spielberg for that.

RE: edward scissorhands r2 v r4

It`s a good idea Norman, and James Cameron did it with True Lies, the notice "This film has been edited for censorship purposes" appeared on the initial UK video and laserdisc releases, but nobody seemed to care.

RE: BBFC to blame?

Yeah, that`s what I initially thought, but Sight and Sound gives the running time for the theatrical release as 110 minutes 9 seconds, a figure they have not since amended, leading to an approx 105-106 minute run time on PAL video, as stated on the DVD box. But people who have seen the film on video say that it only runs for 101 minutes, which is an 8% loss on the theatrical running time. So it seems likely that some has gone walkabout.

RE: BBFC to blame?

Tony: I had Cliffhanger on UK laserdisc, having seen it first in the States theatrically, and you`re right, the laser version was ineptly cut. If the new Momentum dvd is the same print, you have my sympathy. Is there an email address for Momentum on the box? We could try writing to them for their comments. If anyone has an email address for the Billy Elliot distributors, please let me know as I`m keen to write to them `n all. You`re right about pricing as well. I have reluctantly decided to only buy R2 at £13 or less now, which means I`ll have to wait a while, and I`m sure I`ll miss out on some, but what can you do? Having said that, my local Smiths is staffed by muppets who never fail to have a pretty decent stock of wrongly priced discs in the racks, Clockwork Orange £7 off, Vertigo £6 off. Thank God for inefficient and uncaring staff.
