Play.com

First off i`d like to say that play.com is without a doubt the best online dvd supplier that I have ever used,however i was wondering whether anyone else is a little annoyed with the french writing alongside the english on the covers of the dvds.I know cos Play get canadian region 1 dvds that obviously some will have both languages on the covers because a lot of canadians speak french, but i recently received Spy Game and the french writing is as big as the english and to me this really gets on my nerves.Anyone else noticed this on their dvds.

Jon

I`m glad you mentioned Play.com cos` I recently noticed them and have been contemplating purchasing off them, I even sen`t them an E-Mail (which they answered quite promptly) I don`t know if you have noticed but their trading under `Jersey Law` which is outside the UK, so it struck me that there may be an import duty/tax to look out for, but they stated that unless an item is marked up as coming direct from the US (etc) supplier then NO there will be no Duty on the order. So I`m glad to hear that their a decent company and they will recieve an order from me shortly.

Thanx M8

I most definitely recommend play.com,the amount of times i`ve received a region 1 dvd from them prior to the actual release date is amazing.They have a great policy of shipping out pre-orders as soon as they receive the discs rather than unlike some companies waiting for the actual release date.
Oh and i have only ever had to pay an import tax once when i ordered Die Hard Trilogy Boxset,maybe this was because the package was quite heavy.Anyway i order single films all the time from then and have never had a problem as such,disregarding this topic of course.

hi; glad someone else has a `thing` about this,it ruins your collection,yes, its as bad as the r2 uk dvds full of badges and stickers for irish regulations and others, I do believe that the discs are the same as usa versions,but, are they?;there is a reverse on the sleaves which pxxxxxs me of more as its to make the french prominate over the english, why can they not do a reverse with english only,save costs to me, but there again that to simple for these rocket scientist?;i have deal with play for 4 yrs now and been very happy, till ``spy game`` and ``time machine` now, so have moved to direct inporting, I do understand that the disc has to be over a ammount of £17.oo(approx) to qualify for inport tax/vat;this is not 100% confirmed but differant sources have stated this,never put to the test.anyway cancelled all play orders from now,they were sorry for this but could not help, I did recommend that they displayed a small sign for ref but they seamed to think that it would `put buyers off`, they DO display on there web pages the full english cover? and to the guy above who seems to think tippex will do? have you never seen a quality r1 dvd only the INFERIOR r 2 versions, which of the amount ive seen are subject to little niggly hic ups and sound jerks,NOT TO MENTION THE CUTS FOR VIDEO/DVD RELEASE;;;;;

Following up on the import taxes that BoilingPoint talked about:

Play.com TOTALLY rules on this front. I recently ordered `O Brother Where Art Thou`. It`s region 2, but the customs picked it anyways and I had to pay almost £9 extra to get out!
But Play.com reimbursed my credit card 100% !

They are truly the greatest, at least on R2 titles =O)

In relation to the Canadian dual language boxes take into consideration that its elements of the french population who start shouting if their language isn`t present so the outside sleeve must have both languages to avoid this. If the reverse of the sleeve was English only then they`d be demanding that the main side was french only, so its easier just to reverse the emphasis. I reckon the english population would only be bothered if they started putting everything in french

Canada is a dual language country, not an English speaking one that has a few shouty French people in it. There are Canadians out there who do not speak any English at all. In Quebec City you will not see any English signs. Canada is a R1 country, but they have to take into consideration the needs of that country. Legally all packaging in Canada has to be in both French & English.

Try asking a Welsh person who speaks no English, how fair it is that everything on British R2 packaging is written in English and that generally there are no Welsh subtitles. In fact I just checked all my R2 British DVDs and there are no Welsh subtitles on any of them.

NB. I am neither Welsh, French or Canadian.
