I got taxed on a Play247 order!

sparkster (Elite) posted this on Friday, 19th October 2001, 16:29

I ordered The X-Files Season 3 (R1) boxset from Play last week costing £75.99. Today it arrived but I had to collect it from the post office and pay £8.94 value added tax and £1.20 post office charges.

What went wrong? I`ve ordered many region 1 titles (including X-Files Season 1+2) without paying any tax.

One odd thing about this case was that on the invoice inside and on the box the value was listed as $75.99 not £75.99 which I had paid. Could the fact it appeared I was charged in $ be the reason I was taxed £10.14 and can I claim it back from Play?

Hi !
This is not exactly the same case as yours, but I thought I`d share it with u guys. I have been ordering DVD films from the US in lots of around $100 for past 4 - 5 months now and the customs has never even bothered to check the packages (I stay near Manchester). However, yesterday, for the first time in 6 months, Customs opened my package and taxed me some 11 pounds. I have probably exceeded the limit of 18 and 36 pounds a few times before and always got away with it. But I guess due to the current situation, all our packages are going to be scrutinised very closely.
So guys !! I expect that for a few months more, we`ll have to be careful about the amount of our order or expect the customs to pop in !
Does anyone know if customs will now look into every package I order, since I have been charged once? Do they maintain such a database?

Cheers !!

Trust me if your package has been opened and you`ve received your titles then there is no reason to be concerned. Your name will not be added to their list of concerns. If your packages were all sent together, i.e. separately but arrived in the UK together on the same day them Customs would have noticed this and decided to check the contents. If they had been spread out then you stand much less chance of being charged.

Believe me if Customs were concerned about your imports they would either confiscate your items or have got some Government colleagues to pay you a visit.

I too was charged on Friday :(
I had asked them before I ordered a box set if I would be charged by Customs and they said NO.
I have emailed them and waiting to hear from them but I expect to get my money back :)

I`m surprised you got charged on a Play order. The few times i`ve ordered stuff over the import limit, the packet has been marked "UK Tax Paid by Play" i.e. they paid the tax upfront. Interesting to hear what Play say.
