How old is it? How much use has it had?

Could be the backlight going, or it could be a dodgy connection in the lid. Does gently pinching the lid round the edges make it suddenly come back on?

Sounds like the backlight or the invertor.
If It`s *just* outside of the warranty it`s worth a go at the fit for purpose route, it should work for a bit more than just a year... might end up with a FOC repair.

According to Trading Standards legislation goods have to be "fit for purpose" and they would argue that because something is 1 day out of warranty it should be reasonably expected to last longer than that, obviously depends on the item, a frying pan used every day in a hotel burning the non stick surface off wouldnt, a £500 fridge would....contact them or consumer direct is it now?

EDIT : Why are u picking it up by the screen??

I was gonna come back to this thread to say similar as this might screw you completely for a repair so whaever you do don`t mention it`s been getting picked up like this, just that it`s stopped working.

I guess I should update

I used it through the tv for all these months and tried to claim on the house insurance (computer says no) they wouldn`t pay out due to it being portable ...?..

£51 for a new scene of eBay sorted ,... Glad it worked

Always nice to find out how these things turn out! (if only so those that arrive with a similar problem via google see the end result)

£51 sounds like a reasonable deal for a new screen on a laptop.
