Anyone with Sky Broadband? Opinions please.

I am thinking of switching from Pipex Max service to Sky and wondered if anyone had used them.

The reason is Pipex have been very good, but over the last year the service has gone down hill, my connection is intermittent, I`m supposed to be on a 2.5Mb connection, download speeds are slow most of the time, occasinally hit 150k but most of the time it is about 30k but they keep saying there is not a problem and basically wont do anything about it.

I`ve tried buying a new router, re-formatting my laptop, using a different laptop, disconnecting everything in the house apart from the router, but they still say there is nothing wrong with my connection so must be something at my end.

Then last week we had a leaflet from Sky offering up to 16Mb un-capped for £10/month, a fair bit less than the £25 I`m paying Pipex.

I don`t want to change because so many people have my email address, it would be a great hassle to have to let everyone know.

All the best

Gerald.

Also - think about investing in a new email address that is transferrable...e.g. a gmail one...(can be used with the POP email apps or on the web).
Or perhaps getting a domain name and using that in you mail address.

I`m lucky as I`ve always used a Hotmail address...but had to win the wife over when we switched from Pipex to BT as she was using her Pipex mail as the main account.
Luckily a good friend gave up one of his accounts (they give you 12!) so she could keep her account active.

I`ve got Sky BB (max connection, I get around 10.5Mb speed) and it is alright. Had a fair few problems at the start as the IP address range that was newly allocated to Sky was blocked by a few ISPS as an anti-spamming tactic but that`s all sorted long ago.
I also had problems where the connection kept dropping but after a couple of weeks of moaning at their support people the problem miraculously went away.

Since that was sorted, it`s been pretty stable although I do occasionally lose the BB connection and have to reboot the router. Seems to work ok for ages (months) then need rebooting a few times in a few days.

On the email front, I still use my Virgin.net email address (sshhhhhhhhh don`t tell them!) which I stopped using as an ISP about 3 years ago or so (been through Tesco and PlusNet since then). I use the Virgin POP servers to collect the mail and whatever SMTP server my current ISP provides.

I`ve got a website registered just never taken the plunge in changing over to using it for my email accounts...but that`s just cos I`m bone idle. :)

I used this website loads when I had my problems: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/
It has loads of advice on all matters Sky.

Hope this helps!

are you in a cable broadband area?

If so.. go to cable. I did and would never go back to Overhead wires and non existant ADSL.
