USB Installing Probs

Batavia (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 10th December 2006, 15:27

Here we go again. Why do I bother?
Anyway, I have put in the front of the computer 4 USB 2.0 hubs (whatever) that are v1.1 compatible. I thought that would be it, bit oh no, nothing on a computer is that simple. >:(
All went well, put it in place, connected power. Then I find I have to internally connect it to a USB socket via the lead from the hub. I don`t have an internal USB socket!!
I have two USB ports at the back which I am assuming are USB1.0. They are not slotted in, just screwed in and then attached by a band-type thing to the board.
Their is no place on the internal board where I can attach any new USB thingies. The attachment seems to be about 8 "prongs".
What do I need to buy to get this new device up and running via the USB cable? Will it be USB 2.0 or am I stuck with USB 1 forever?
Would either one of these two here do the trick?
Hope this makes sense.
below is a bit of detail from the Device Manager that might help.
Help!!
Hope all this makes sense.
Ta.
Device Type: Universal Serial Bus controllers
Manufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)
Location: PCI bus 0, device 2, function 0

Bat its all depends on your motherboard, what make and model is it? we can then check if you can add any usb ports or you have to use a powered hub which to be honest would be much easier and not mean you having to open your case.

Hope this helps

mmm chocolate

Strange that your motherboard doesn`t have a USB header on it. Are you sure?
If not, you`ll probably be better with a PCI card like this. (do a search yourself - that was literally the first google hit I found)
Just slots in. :)

Don`t know if thne below helps, cut `n paste from Belarc
:
Main Circuit Board
1.67 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
384 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N266VM REV 1.xx
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software, Inc. ASUS A7N266-VM ACPI BIOS Rev 1006 04/29/2003

I am not sure if one will be suitable for a PCI slot as I need an internal USM thingy.
Edit: Actually, looking at it, this might do the trick.
Any ideas?

you do have 2 usb headers on the board
go to http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
and type in a7n266-vm into the which model box top left then select and download the manual.
you have 2 usb ports on the port block. 1 pair of ports on a backplate plugged into one of the usb headers on the board (marked as USB23 and USB45 on the motherboard next to each other with one pin missing from the 10).
If your usb front panel has a connector with pins rather than a socket the oops you are stuffed. If its a socket with 8 pins then well you can chance it but if you get it the wrong way round you will be connecting ground to power or vice versa. Note that for 4 usb ports you will need to disconnect the back panel lead as each socket only provides 2 usb port connectors unless the front panel is a usb hub in itself.
If you want to keep the two on the back and the front panel is not a hub then tough as you will then have to buy an extra usb port card to replace them.
Upgrading a pc without knowing what you`re doing is never going to be easy as you need to have the motherboard manual and other details to check whether it has the necessary sockets and can support the item you wish to attach

The new USB front hub is the Belkin here.
It only has a USB cable to attach to something-or-other I do not seem to have.
I just new this plug `n play stuff was gonna be a lie.
So I want to attach this USB cable to something internal, but there just ain`t anything internal to attach it to. Sigh.

Usually one is blanked to prevent that.
So bats, your new `card` has a cable with another USB connector on? They`re designed to connect onto an existing USB port (usually) on the back. It will only be USB 1 if that`s what they are. It`s usually a block with 2 rows of connectors (5 and 4 I think) connectors that connect directly onto the motherboard.

There is nothing on the Belkin (front of PC) hub to connect to the motherboard other than a USB "ordinary" cable, but the motherboard has no USB place for it to go into.
I am a wiz at Windows, get my hands on any software and I am away.Alas, such a "sissy" at the hardware side of things.
Cor blimey, I just thought I would slide the thing into the front slot and away we would go. Not to be by the looks of things :/

This might do the trick. Put this in the back slot where the old ones are, then attach the new Belking hub cable to the internal section of this. Yes?
