US Pay as you go

gpen (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 27th April 2005, 20:46

Will be in the US in just over a month, and was just wondering if anybody knew, or could recommend a pay as u go deal for while I am over there - it will just be SIM only with no expiry, so I can reuse the SIM card?

I bought one from Dabs last year, wasn`t suitable as couldn`t get a signal in US & didn`t work in Canada as it was advertised as covering both.

A locally bought one would have done me better after enquirying in a mall..

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

so its safe to assume most networks such as Verizon provide them?

I know my phone`s tri-band, but don`t want to give the work SIM a hammering..for obvious reasons :)

I managed to get a refund or mine, but the best thing was to poke\ask around in phone\cable TV shops in the malls.

Fido (I think) were a new company that offered connectivity in the US & Canada as a PAYG who I found in a mall in the Toronto area. The SIM was quoted as about $35CAD (£15 at the time) with some airtime I think.

Having bought one already, I went & paid through the nose through Orange\Rodgers (Ca) for short calls home where I could get a signal, dont think I got a signal in US (but thats mainly due to us being out in the sticks of Michigan & not bothering to turn the phone on.)

Cheers Rass - will have a look when I get there.

Should be mainly in the the main cities in Texas, so would expect to be OK signal-wise
