peer2peer porn question?

kt123 (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 16th February 2005, 18:46

I use a filter on my son`s computer to block sites of an adult nature, but i`ve heard that it might still be possible for him to access porn and god knows what else, on peer to peer services, is that right? Does this filtering software just stop inappropriate web pages?

Ive accidentally (no..seriously ;)) downloaded stuff on p2ps that would make your hair turn white.

You *can* set filters on most p2ps but lots of stuff is mislabled and you will come across jazz sooner or later.

If he is a wee lad i would recommend supervision on all p2p misadventures.

And then theres the ethical dilemma of, even if hes not seeing skinflicks, knowing a minor is commiting copy right theft, by dloading kid friendly tunes, with your knowledge in the first place. Oh the joys of 21st century parenting ;)

When im a pappy itll be naked holographic women this and virtual reality implant harcore that.........

So just to confirm. Netnanny for instance, wouldn`t block any of this stuff?

If you are trying to over-protect him as such, I can GUARANTEE that he`ll be getting the stuff that you are "not allowing" from elsewhere. Whereas if you let him be he probably wouldn`t bother about it at all.

It`s the "don`t touch" syndrome. You can download porn off school/public library computers, mobile phones, buy magazines, play DVD/VCD on DVD players and games consoles (including GBA) and many other mediums.

I can do without the parenting lesson thanks. I just wish to know a specific answer to a technical question.

Simple solution to internet at home.

I keep the computer with the internet connection in the living room so I can superviise the kids unintensionally ;)

It can also be locked off with a key lock on the phone socket, if an adult is not there.

There is another older computer upstairs, but has no connection and they can use that for homework, data storage and other computer programing activicties.

Depending on how technically minded you are, or what kind of hardware you have, I would suggest blocking P2P ports on the router.

Alterntively, if you`re very concerned, you could always change to an ISP which already blocks those ports (which are often cheaper too, as they are targetting non-bandwidth leachers).
