just left laptop on train!

Hi, i left my bag with sensitive information and laptop on a train earlier today, i`ve called the lost and found department and they said they`d call me if anything was handed in etc.
This was a pretty exspensive laptop, so i won`t be holding my breath, therefor i was wondering if it doesn`t turn up after a certain time, can i treat it as theft and report it to police and look at the train`s in built cctv. (which a sticker on the carriage claimed it did have)
Oh god, what a nightmare!

RE: Internet Explorer Problems

I do mostly use firefox, but i need another web browser for certain sites. ie. to have 2 hotmail accounts open.
I know there`s alternatives to IE, but i don`t actually find it that bad. Apart from the problems i mentioned of course!

Internet Explorer Problems

I`ve just bought a new computer running vista with the latest version of Internet Explorer.
I`ve experienced a few little niggly problems that i`d like to sort out.

1)Everytime i open a new tab, a `warning` dialog box pops up, that won`t let me click on any other link until i click ok`, There is a box you can click which says `don`t show me this message again` but it always does show you it again.
I think this first started happening after i downloaded anti spyware software. Is there any way i can get rid of this?

2)When i open a new tab is it possible for it automatically go to google (my preferred homepage) instead of a blank page. (i`d also like to do this with firefox)

3)When i first started using IE, it would often crash unexpectedly, making me lose all my open tabs, it said that the reason was the flash add on, i tried disabling that and it hasn`t crashed since, the only problem is that i can`t view websites like youtube anymore.

4)This problem relates to above, if it does crash again, is it possible to automatically save the open tabs like firefox does and give you a chance to restore your session?

Thanks in advance.

how to wipe a computer b4 taking back to the store?

I bought a medion desktop pc from Aldi recently, i`ve been using it for about a week to surf the internet etc. The hard drive is ridiculously noisy though and i can`t live with it so i`m going to have to take it back.
I was a bit worried about leaving any personal data on the machine though, so i just wondered if anyone could suggest precautionary steps i should take to wipe the data from the machine?
P.S. the operating system is windows vista, is there a simple restore to defaults setting?
Thanks.

hotmail problem - can`t move emails into folders

Well i can move them but the problem is whenever i do the screen automatically refreshes to show the earliest emails i have.
So for example i might want to move an order confirmation from amazon to a folder called `receipts` but if i do it`ll then come up with emails from 2004 onwards! This obviously makes things very time consuming when you need to move a lot of messages as you constantly have to refind your spot.
It`s just one of those niggling little problems i`d like to sort out, so any help appreciated.

how to add google search to firefox?

I mistakenly changed the option when you right click on text in firefox from `search google` to `search godaddy`.
searching google without having to copy and paste the relevant text in a new tab was a useful little feature, and one i`d really like to get back.
Any idea how i can change this setting?

RE: my dvd recorders gone kaput with important discs unfinalised!

Hi there hunsbury, sorry for the late reply, i`ve only just remembered to look back at this thread.
I too bought the recorder from ebuyer, so i`d love it if you could point me in the right direction of the jvc customer service guy.
cheers.

my dvd recorders gone kaput with important discs unfinalised!

I bought a JVC DR-M10EK DVD Recorder from Ebuyer in September 2005 (i`m going to have to check the warranty but i think it was only 1 year)
I bought this specifically to transfer old vhs home movies, i did eventually get around to doing this, the problem is that i never finalised the disc and now when i turn on the machine it`s permanantly stuck on `loading` and of course the discs won`t play in another player without being finalised.
So my question is, would i be able to finalise the discs on any jvc brand dvd recorder? Or would it have to be the same model?
Finally, are there places i would be able to go simply for this service?
Thanks for your help.

RE: PDA Sat Nav, under 60 notes!

So just to confirm, you could use this handheld in a strange city and it`ll tell you where you are and where to go?

just bought an external hd - no idea what to do next

The model i bought is listed below, the trouble is it came with no instructions or software, so i`m left wondering how do i actually do things like backup my entire system.
Also some reviewers mentioned converting from Fat32 to NTFS, i can see that if i right click there`s an option to format, but i wanted to make sure it was the right thing to do before i did so.

RE: hard drive partition problem

I have no technical knowledge in this area, so what i`m saying is probobly really obvious, but bear with me.
The problem i have is that i tried to copy some pictures to my computer today, but it kept failing half way through because i didn`t have enough disk space left. The only drive that`s full is the c drive though, so how would i add things like photos to the d drive? Or would it be better to add more space to the c drive? What exactly is the point of the partition anyway?
Thanks.

hard drive partition problem

Hi, i have a 30gb hard drive in my laptop, it`s partitioned in 2 and the c drive is almost completely full, what i`d like to know is how do i use the spare space? (d drive)
Appreciate any help.

RE: Multimedia PC Base Station at Aldi £399.99 from 15th

Quote:
dont worry too much this is the second time aldi have had these computers in within a few months. the last lot were in just before christmas, i know because i saw the que for them on a sunday morning when i bought a 320gb hard drive from there.
to be honest i was surprised they had them back in so quickly but it is the second lot in 3 months.

Well that`s quite encouraging.
The whole situation seems a bit strange to me, why are there always such limited numbers of PCs? Surely if there`s a demand they`d want to supply it.

RE: Multimedia PC Base Station at Aldi £399.99 from 15th

All sold out when i went to my local store.
Really disappointed, how often do Aldi have these sort of offers?

RE: Multimedia PC Base Station at Aldi £399.99 from 15th

Thanks that`s incredibly useful but i`m gonna push my luck and ask another couple of things that are niggling me.

1)Is it easily expandable? E.G. to add extra RAM or a second internal hard drive?
2)I had in mind to have both vista and xp on the machine, is that a technically easy thing to do or should i be aware now that it`s more difficult than it sounds?

Again much thanks.

RE: Multimedia PC Base Station at Aldi £399.99 from 15th

Thanks, that is indeed useful.
I think i may go for the computer, but there`s just a couple of things i wanted to ask;

1)It is possible to have different computers using different versions of windows on a wireless network isn`t it? (e.g. i have a netgear dg834g router, my existing laptop is xp and this new desktop would be vista)

2)I liked the look of the reccomended widescreen monitor, but i was wondering if you`re going to have dual monitors, do you think it would be too wide? Is it the norm to have square dual screens? Or is it just personal taste?

3)Finally could anyone confirm if both of these products have 3 year warranties? I seem to remember previous posts here said there were but i couldn`t see anything listed on the website.

Thanks for your help.

RE: Multimedia PC Base Station at Aldi £399.99 from 15th

I`m seriously thinking of buying this computer but apart from being a bit nervous about the vista compatibility stories, i had a few questions;

1)Out of the box it should run vista smoothly shouldn`t it?
2)Would this pc be fat enough for programs such as photoshop and adobe premiere?
3)Would i be able to run more than one monitor using this graphics card? (like stockmarket traders have)
4)What are peoples opinions on the monitor for £99 also being offered at the same time?

Appreciate any help given in answering those questions.

how to stop `error reports`

I`m always being presented with the option of sending an `error report` I would never want to send one in a million years and they just slow down my computer whilst they load.
Is there any setting i can change to completely disable this feature.
(i`ve got windows xp)

RE: firefox tab question

that`s perfect.
thanks very much

firefox tab question

I was wondering, when you open a new tab in firefox is there a way you can make each new tab your homepage (e.g. google) as it`s annoying having to press another button everytime i want to perform a search

RE: Free £5 Firebox.com Voucher

RE: how to find a cheap childrens book illustrator?

Quote:
Or if he`s old enough to do his own drawings the result could be really really cute and would be a special record of his young creativity.

Remember these?:

Yeah, that`s a good idea that i had considered, but he`s got various learning difficulties and drawing isn`t really his strong point.
I do like the childish hand drawn look though, maybe i ought to post on a childrens forum asking for submissions.

how to find a cheap childrens book illustrator?

I`ve got a crazy notion in my head to write a childrens book based on some characters my little boy thought up, i`ve never done anything like this before, so have no idea where to start, writing it will be the easy part, but as it`s going to be aimed at pretty young children so they`ll be lots of illustrations (every other page) I have absolutely no artistic talent, so i`m hoping to find someone who does.
I can`t afford to pay much as the book will primarily be for our own enjoyment but obviously if a publisher shows an interest that`d be brilliant.
Is there anyway i can find artists who would be willing to do some work at below market rates? Maybe for a share of any profits? Or students who want the experience?
Does anyone know of any such websites where i could post my request without it sticking out like a sore thumb and offending those who would expect professional levels of pay?
Thanks for any help.

RE: is there anyway to check all your different hotmail addresses at one time?

Quote:
Use different browsers for each? I can log in to other sites with 2 accounts at the same time using Firefox and Opera.

I`ve got a really slow crappy computer and the processor would probobly grind to a halt if i tried that, besides i`ve got about 5 accounts.

Quote:
Can you use outlook express to check them? I can, but I`m not sure if all accounts can?
Not web based, but easier than logging in

This would be the next best thing, i`m gonna have to see if i`m able to do that.

thanks for your help.

RE: is there anyway to check all your different hotmail addresses at one time?

Quote:
I think you can forward them all to just one address (unless this is just with Hotmail Live...or I dreamt it).

Sounds positive, any idea how to do it though?

is there anyway to check all your different hotmail addresses at one time?

I`ve got a few different accounts, 1 for business, 1 for family, 1 to stay annonomous etc.
And it gets really annoying having to log in, read the meassges, log out then log back in to the next account.
Is there a way i could read the messages at just one place? Preferably web based?
Thanks for your help.

please help! i`m infected with `intcodec`

I`ve stupidly just clicked on something i shouldn`t have and now i`ve installed something called intcodec which makes pop ups appear telling me i`m infected with spyware.
i`ve typed intcodec into google and there does seem to be solutions, but they all seem too complicated for a novice like me.
can anyone explain to me simply what i have to? I don`t understand things like `hijack logs`
Really really appreciate any help you can give.

RE: iPods at Netto

Anyone know if they`re going to sell the 4gb version now or in the future?

RE: Dixons Online Only - 1GB MP3 Player £24.99 (plus £4.99 p&p)

Am i right in thinking that the FM radio is only featured on the optional headphones that they try and sell you at the same time?

RE: How do you convert different files into jpegs?

Quote:
What program are you using to create/edit the pictures in? There should be an option to "save as", and from there an option to choose file type - JPG/JPEG (same thing) should be listed there.

There will also generally be options for the quality/compression used on the image - possibly a slider with quality at one end and compression at the other. The higher the compression the lower the file size (and therefore your web page will download quicker), but the lower the image quality too. It`s a balancing act. For web use, I find 70% quality (or it could be expressed as 30% compression) gives a decent image and low file size.

Hope that helps!

I`m not using any specialist software to create/edit the pictures in.
I`m using windows xp and just right clicking on suitable photos (usually found on google images) then selecting `Save Picture As..` the only options i usually find myself with are to change the file to ART or Bitmap.
