Digital Camera - PC shutdown problem

Dazza001 (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 27th January 2004, 11:50

I`ve just got a digital camera, and have connected it via a USB cable. It seems to be working well, but one little problem: if I`ve connected the camera, I find that the PC hangs on shutdown (I`m using Win98 ) -- strangely, it doesn`t do this if I haven`t had the camera connected at all, so it must be something that happens when only the camera is hooked up.
I`ve re-installed the driver CD that came with it, but still no luck. Any ideas?

Are you using Win98 or Win98 second edition?

If you update to second edition, it irons out many of the problems with USB of the first edition. I think it`s £15 for an official CD from Microsoft but it`s probably cheaper off eBay as well.

If not, then I don`t know what the problem is. All you can really do is unplug it before you shut down.

Thanks for the reply, bigfan.

I`m using Win98 2nd edition. Even unplugging the camera before shutting down doesn`t solve it - if the camera`s been plugged it at any point from startup onwards, the machine crashes on shutdown. Obviously, this will only be a problem at those times when I need to upload photos, but is a bit of an annoyance.

I did notice that the install process was a bit messy. I kept getting numerous "new hardware detected" dialog boxes from Windows, although it didn`t seem to recognise the camera at first, so I unplugged it a few times. I`ve uninstalled an entry in device manager that was for the video driver for the camera (it wasn`t properly installed), but can`t seem to find any other things that look like they`re to do with the camera there. Under "USB devices" in device manager there are a couple of things with letters & numbers, none of which look (to me) as if they`re anything to do with it.

Any other ideas? Thanks again for the reply.

You could delete (uninstall) everything in device manager that is vaguely related to USB. If it`s meant to be there it will re-install itself when you reboot.

If all else fails, www.7dayshop.com have a 6 in 1 card reader for under a tenner. You just plug the card into it and copy the photos across to your hard disk. This *may* work better, but if the USB ports are the problem then it`s not going to help at all.

Have you emailed or phoned the camera manufacturers / suppliers to see what they think? It might be an easily fixed common problem.

Hi

You could try disabling the fast shutdown in the system configuration utility / advanced which you can get via system information in the system tools list.
This will sometimes work with card readers that suffer the same problem .This is not my own fix it was mentioned a while ago in 1 of the computer mags.

bye

R.B ps also works with win me so iam told
