HELP! BT are frying my PC!

Claudia Salinger (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 8th October 2003, 13:07

Hope someone knowledgable can help me with an infuriating problem. My ageing system is: Evesham Vale tower PC consisting of a Chaintech 6BTM mobo, P3 800 FC, 512MB PC100 SDRAM, 30GB HD, Nvidia TNT2 16MB AGPx2, Win ME, IE 5.0, 56k internal modem, Mailwasher, popup killer, Norton Systemworks 2003, HP CD-RW, Creative DVD-RoM and Soundblaster.

I`ve had Openworld now since March and it keeps freezing my PC. I can ordinarily play Champ Manager for hours throughout the day or evening and not have a problem but logging onto BT my PC freezes. Apart from last week when it stayed connected for several hours the BT hom page does not even load up fully before my cursor and the PC are stuck. No keyboard shortcuts work and I have to either shut down or re-start.

The problem with re-starting is that, with BT, I don`t get as far as Scandisk. On re-booting I get the BIOS data and then the screen goes blank and the PC stops sending data to the monitor. I re-start again and get Scandisk this time. However, either the PC freezing or me re-booting causes the video card to re-set display settings to 640 x 480 with minimum colours. I re-set the display to 1024 x 768 and windows re-starts. I then change the colurs back to 32-bit. When I get into Windows ME the desktop has gone and I have to recover it.

When all this has been done (10 mins later) I try again to connect to BT and it fails again. Last week (with the exception of Tuesday when it stayed online for hours) I got 10-15 minutes use inbetween re-booting sessions.

Can anyone offer their experiences of BT and suggest how this can be fixed? I`ve tried logging on to BT`s newsgroups but my work PC does not allow access to these. I`ve e-mailed BT but am not expecting a fast response. I don`t really want to re-format my PC or buy a new one just yet so any help would be appreciated. :) Claudia

have you try`d formating ya pc if not try it reset it back to how it was when you bought it then if you still have the same problem try contacting bt to see if there is anything they can do but in my experiance with computers you need to reset them back every now and again also try and defrag it as well first,it will sort ya hard drive out and put every thing back in its proper place. If you dont keep on top of it thats when you start to get problems.

one problem might be that you have to much on your pc so there would not be enough memory to do anything else especially on an old machine one way would be to get rid of stuff you dont really need or save to re-writable cds files you that you need ie mp3s videos ect this will free up a lot of space you will be surprised of another way is to get more memory is to by a new hard drive with more momory than what youve got if this doesn`t work although i don`t see why that`s half the battle then check your connnection speed you might not have configured your modem properly bt openworld is relatively slow i had it before i upgraded to broadband which is 10-20 times faster it might be worth a try windows 98 and higher is needed though anything else wont have enough memory any way hope this helps

I see your using ME - try using sytem restore to take it back before the problem started.

Seeing as it seems internet related it may also be worth taking out your modem and installing it into a different pci slot - sometimes makes a difference.

You should upgrade to IE 6 as well.
