Converting dvd`s to mp4: miscellaneous dumb questions
Have just bought a fifth generation 30GB ipod.
I know that you can convert dvds to mp4`s to play on it, just wondering if anyone has any practical knowledge on this?
Does it take long?
Is the quality any good?
How is the battery life much would a half hour programme take up?
Why did post this in the music section?

Mpeg 4 is DVD quality....so I don`t really see the advantages of conversion. Unless you mean you want to further compress? :B

I see. I really don`t know anything about this stuff (as you may have guessed).
The ipod says it can store up to 150 hours of video. I presume since it has only 30GB of memory that this must be at a pretty crappy resolution.
Do you have any idea how much memory a 90 min DVD would take up (at DVD quality)?

Generally about 4GB at MPEG4....but with such a teeny screen you`d be better to convert it to a DIVX movie ....that way it would be about 650MB and you`d get 40 or so movies on your IPOD, presuming you didn`t want any music / photos!!!
Check out the DIVX website....

But not for iPod / PSP resolution though.
I use PSP Movie Creator and an episode of 24 or Lost can be reduced to about 100 mb and still be good quality. Films can generally be about 300mb and still be very good quality. Remember it aint no 32 inch screen!
I`ve currently got about 8 films on my 2gb Pro Duo card for my PSP and they are all perfect quality (or as perfect as they can be for the size of the screen)
