Sky HD Tech Question

kennedy316 (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 29th January 2009, 07:24

I currently have regular Sky but dont have a TV ariel therefore i get all of my tv viewing through Sky which is connected to the TV via scart.

If i switch to Sky HD will this just connect to my TV via HDMI with no need for a TV ariel in the same way my current set up works??

Also do they provide an HDMI cable when they fit the box??

Thanks for the quick and precise response :)

On another related note, ive never had a phone line connected to my Sky box, will i get away with this with the HD box too?? I figure ill just connect the phone line when the engineer comes and and then disconnect it when hes gone.

I thought the reason behind this was that the box could receive updates via the phone line

Yes, you can disconnect the phone line.
As long as you don`t want to order box office stuff, you`ll be fine.
You will still receive software/EPG updates without a phone line, as they are done via the satellite.

You do not need a telephone line to have Sky installed, just ask the call centre and tell them you do not want it connected to the line.

We had HD installed last year and asked not to have it connected to a phone line. HD was installed no problem but we had to pay £20 for activation of the account. As no phone line was in use with the box the installer had to activate via other means, mobile, hence the £20 charge. So if you go to HD you may have to pay the fee for activation if you choose not to have it connected to the telephone line.

This has changed since I was in the shop then.
Used to be a phone line was required for the first year due to the box being subsidised by some Digital Services people or something.

You could unplug the line, no detriment to the box, but they would ring up when doing random checks as to the box being connected.

If you have Multiroom it`s a standard must as it lets them check the boxes are being used in the same location.

As regards a telephone line connected to the box. If i choose to have one can i have a lead connected between the sky box (adsl connection) and the router i have my broadband and PS3 connected to(also a ADSL connection)

I don`t really understand the question but that`s never stopped me trying to answer before so here goes:

The Sky box uses a normal phone line (ie the same as your house phone) so needs to be connected to a normal phone socket not one of the network sockets on your router. You will need to have a filter on this connection as well just like it was a phone. The PS3 and any PCs you have is connected to your router by CAT5(ish) ethernet wire or wireless.
