Plamsa or LCD?.. That old chesnut again...

cassius76 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 3rd September 2007, 15:35

One of my work mates bumped intome today about the new Panasonic Plasma he had just exchanged for the Samsung LCD he didn`t like. He said the picture was SSSOoo much better on the Plasma. He said that Panasonic also say that it can display 1080p even though it`s not a 1080p set. ? Huh?

So.. Should I buy a Plasma or LCD for chrimbo. I was going to go for LCD but now.. I don`t know anymore...

I am not at all bothered about TV as I hardly watch it. I`m not bothered by the audio either as I have a seperate AV receiver.

It will be mainly used for DVD possibly some sort of Hi def dvd DVD after the format war finishes..and Xbox 360..

so.. Plasma or LCD? anyone got any prefs. 42%er what do you reckon I should get.

And , does it really need to be 1080p. Some people say it needs to be 50" or above to see ANY difference. I have space for a 40 incher. ;)

budget of £1000.00

In that case it is LCD all the way. Screen burn could be an issue for a heavy gamer. Panasonic or Samsung are the two makes I would look at.

Thanks for the advice. I`d popped over to check out AV forums and just got blinded by science. I`ve had my eye on a sammy for a while, and My Brother in law has a 47" one which looks lovely. Also, they are Microsofts 360 partner.. so it looks like I might go with them.

my two peneth worth, & it`s just from my limited personal observations, but i`d avoid plasma for the reasons mentioned by the good doctor, & from the sets i`ve seen, TFT screens display hi def better whilst standard def looks a little ropey (but this has varied between sets i have seen) whilst plasma seems perfectly happy with standard def, & seems to display it better.

again, i have no technical reasons for any of the above, it`s just the way i`ve seen plasma`s/TFT`s that i`ve come across (& i can gaurentee you`ll love the 360 in 1080p ;) )

oh, & tbh, i dunno if it was any good, but aldi had a 1080p 47" tft for £1000 the other week. no idea about the quality & havn`t looked it up, but it looked nice & seemed excellent value for the money, + it had 3year gtee stamped on the box.

Costco have got the 52 inch LCD Sammy for £1799 (inclusive of vat). Unfortunately I didn`t check the model, when I was passing recently, so can`t compare prices. I think there`s a promotion running with £50 off sometime, but not sure when. Good think about getting from Costco, is peace of mind if anything goes wrong, even thought it might be a bit more money.

My brother got the 50 inch one a while back (to replace his new philips which kept having problems) He`s more than happy with the samsung.

My faithful Sony CRT of 10+ years is due for a change. Decisions, decisions, Samsung or Panny, LCD or Plasma? I`m not a gamer, just look to replace main tv for films/tv mainly.

Cheers Niteowl

For films, plasma. Better blacks = more depth to the picture and more vibrant realistic colours. If you can push the boat out go for the pioneer 8 series. It is just so far ahead of any other tv out there. Plasma or LCD.
