Unabl;e to record from Sky + box on certain channels !!!!

Stiggy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 21st September 2005, 18:19

I have a V1 Sky + box & Panasonic DMR 85 HD & DVD Recorder. I have been archiving Little Britain from My Sky + planner to the HD on my Panny recorder. Until this morning that is !!!!!!!!! I tried to copy the latest episode when the Panasonic came up with the following message " Copying of this material is not allowed canot record" . I have tried to record several channels directly from my Sky + including several BBC channels, Sky Movies ITV, CH4. Each time I get the same message. All the sports channels will record as well as Sky 1, Sky News, MTV Kerrang etc. My only thought is Sky have introduced a Copyright signal & installed a filter during the last update. Anybody got any ideas ?

I shouldn`t think that is the case. It is not illegal to record TV programmes for personal use. To my knowledge, copy protection (Macrovision) is only used on Sky Box Office presentations to prevent people producing pirate copies.

But as you say, it would appear something is preventing said channels from being recorded. I would suggest contacting Sky themselves and asking whether there are issues regarding the new EPG software version and transferring recordings to DVD.

Perhaps another forum member can offer more help.

I had this happen to me over a year ago,but it was only pay channels that were affected.BBC and other FTA channels, and even encrypted FTV channels were fine, but all pay channels were unrecordable as Macrovision was being triggered inadvertently.
Despite several engineers visits, then engineer team leaders (for over 4 hours),assertions that my dvd recorder was faulty etc the fault was discovered to be the viewing card.
Best way to check this is to try another viewing card(only Movies and Sport will not appear with the wrong card-normal Pay stuff like Sky One will appear)and see if your dvdr will record the affected channels with another card.
But as your BBC is affected,I would double check you do have a problem with BBC1,which is unusual as its completely clear of encryption, and if you do,remove the card and try to record the same BBC region from the list that appears later in the EPG.After you remove your card, reboot the box. This will leave BBC1 London on 101.Assuming thats not your local region, search for that in the latter part of the EPG then try to record it.If it works without, and fails with, that means its your card.
But good luck getting a Sky CS person to believe you without forcing you to accept a new box and umpteen visits from engineers.
I must not forget to mention that although the card was the dodgy element,it was the same with replacement cards as something(I never discovered what) had been added to my account to make this happen.Even the big technical bods at Isleworth could not explain it,although I`m sure there is a solution by now
