RE: Let`s leave behind a somewhat crap 2007 and look forward to a more positive 2008!

Some people tend to believe the grass is greener on the other side. It isn't, of course.

Just as some people think the grass is greener in the UK.

Some people buy a home in Florida after taking their annual two-week holiday there only to find that, when reality sets in, they cannot stand the place.

It works both ways.

RE: Don`t you just love that freshly installed feeling...

I`ve been using WIndows XP for about 3 years and have not once experienced the BSOD or any `serious` errors.

Windows 98 was a different story completely.

RE: Upgrade advice...

I have a budget of about £100.

I use the computer for browsing the Internet, word processing and watching the odd video, etc. I don't use it for playing games.

I would simply like to get the best upgrade (or replacement) possible for £100.

Adam

Upgrade advice...

At the moment I am running Windows XP Home using an ASRock K7VM2 (3.0) motherboard with 1.4GHz AMD Duron processor, 512MB of RAM and 32MB onboard graphics.

The system generally runs fine despite being outdated. However, it is beginning to struggle with some applications, i.e. QuickTime, iTunes, Adobe Flash, video playback, etc.

I cannot afford a brand new system at the moment but I can afford to make one or two upgrades.

The motherboard can support up to an AMD Athlon XP 2600 processor, 2GB of DDR RAM and AGP x4 graphics.

Recommendations?

Adam

ADSL Connection Problems

Last night as I monitored the status of my ADSL connection I saw the SNR rapidly deteriorate until the connection was lost completely. The router then reconnected at a slightly slower speed before disconnecting again after a minute or so. It then continued to try to reconnect again but without success.

After spending 30 minutes in queue I managed to speak to someone from tech support. They don't know what the problem is. I'll have to wait for an engineer to be sent out to the exchange and/or my property in the next 3 days. However, they did manage to "force" a connection at 256kbps, as that is all my line would accept.

My normal connection speed is a stable 3mbps.

Any ideas?

Adam

RE: Going to NYC again to do my Xmas Shopping...anybody have any ideas on Bargains???

When I visited the U.S. (or more than one occasion) I found that altough some things were generally cheaper (a lot cheaper in some cases, i.e. food) other things (cameras, etc) were actually about the same price - maybe £10-15 cheaper.

RE: BBC redundancies

I also worry about the direction in which the BBC is heading. Are we starting to see the broadcaster's downfall? It will become increasingly difficult for them to justify the cost of the TV Licence in the future.

In my opinion the corporation should scrap the television channels BBC3, BBC4 and Cbeebies, as well as radio stations Radio 6, Radio 7, 1extra and Asian Network.

Also, programmes such as Eastenders should either be entirely scrapped or reduced dramatically to divert funds to high quality programming.

A cut in high quality factual programming, drama series and news broadcasts is not acceptable.

RE: OK ( Say !? ) that you have 24 hour`s left until you die .... What would you do ??

Reminds me of an episode of American Dad! from season 1 where Stan thinks he has just 24 hours to live so decides to watch... 24.

RE: Al Gore named Nobel Peace Prize Winner

It was just yesterday that a High Court judge slammed his Oscar-winning documentary for containing 9 scientific errors. But it still gets the message across so that's all right say Al's loyalists.

I don't think anybody seriously thinks climate change doesn't exist or isn't happening, because it does and is. The question is: Why?

Is climate change a natural occurrence or caused by man? The explanations on both sides of the fence are equally persuasive.

Personally I haven't made up my mind yet.

What I do know is that people don't like being told how to live their lives. We are told that by paying more tax we can potentially save the planet.

As humans I don't believe we are capable of saving the planet, whatever that means. That is a task much greater than us.

I myself wouldn`t have put it like that but that is pretty spot on. I can`t deny it! I have read through some of my older posts (embarrassing as they are) and I just cannot believe some of the things I used to say. But hey, that`s what you get for opening your mouth (or typing) without thinking.

RE: Radio f***ing Four

I'm not sure what Ofcom's guidelines state in relation to strong language broadcast via radio. I could be wrong but I think as long as any strong language is used within context and is 'justified' it's OK.

I regularly listen to James Whale and Ian Collins on talkSPORT radio and both programmes contain what some people would define as 'strong language'.

Yes, but it does appear to be getting better!

Hello everyone...

Hello everyone.

Please accept my apology for the way I behaved in 2005 and any times previous to that. I realise now that some of the views I expressed were ignorant and offensive, not to mention prudish. I have 'grown up' considerably since that time and like to think my opinions are more informed and less of what they once were, I hope.

I read through a few older posts and read a comment suggesting that I might still be posting comments but under a different name. To be honest I haven't visited the DVD Reviewer website for over a year now, possibly even two years. But I have no way of proving that so you'll just have to take my word for it!

How are you all doing?

RE: How often does your Sky+ box let you down ?

i seem to lose signal every time it rains, is this normal? could be a problem living in wales!

You must have a weak satellite signal. The weather, unless extremely bad, does not cause any problems for me.

A bigger satellite dish would help to fix the problem.

RE: Rubbish Quality DVD`s

What do they look like? I sometimes get "waves" in dark parts of the DVD`s, especially at the beginning.

If the video is heavily compressed (like some channels on Sky Digital) it creates blocks when there is fast movement, or slow if the compression is very bad.

RE: More 4. New channel comming soon.

As such you can be expecting `Cosmetic Surgery Rodeo` and `The boy whos knackers fell off` by the bucket load. Its intelligent programming for the bacardi breezer generation.

nickthegun, I take your point and for once I agree with you :)

RE: More 4. New channel comming soon.

I saw an advert for this channel the other day - and I must say I thought it was going to be a soft-porn type "adult" channel! It looked and sounded just like an advert for those porn-type channels...

Yes, exactly. More or less reinforces my point about Channel 4. If More4 is supposed to be a serious channel (which I have my doubts about), why advertise it in such a way?

RE: More 4. New channel comming soon.

If it does turn out to be full of nudie films im sure you will be the first to fire off a letter to Mary Whitehouse.

Possibly (well, maybe to Ofcom), but it all depends who is getting naked, doesn`t it? :)

But back to my earlier point, if More4 is anything like Channel 4 or E4 then as far as I am concerned it won`t be worth watching. But I am looking forward to seeing the new channel. I see they will be showing the new series of Curb Your Enthusiasm, previously on BBC FOUR (but the BBC ruined it).

RE:

I have a feeling The Aristocrats will be like "Jerry Springer: The Opera" - OK and funny for the first 10 minutes but then just boring and over-the-top.

RE: Rubbish Quality DVD`s

I don`t mind the odd bit of grain, its the signs of compression and macroblocking that eat my lunch, so to speak... :)

RE: Dts On New Gladiator SE Dvd?????

No, it doesn`t look like it has a DTS soundtrack. Dolby Digital is just as good anyway :)

RE: More 4. New channel comming soon.

as in inteligent rather than porn

Slightly hard to believe that from Channel 4 considering the amount of smut they put on their "flagship" channel, but I shall give them the benefit of the doubt. What I have read of the new channel sounds interesting and indeed intelligent, but we shall she.

I hope to God they keep Jimmy Carr and any other annoying "comedian" away from it!!!

RE: How often does your Sky+ box let you down ?

I have also had it when I have been asked for a PIN number when watching a recorded film. I have never used the PIN.

It seems PIN entry is now mandatory for programmes/films with certificates 12, 15 and 18 when viewed outside of the 8:00 pm to 5:00 am watershed.

RE: Box of the Banned

I think there was a rumour a while back that the cut scenes were part of the DVD extras but it is not true. The BBFC also rate DVD extras, the entire content of the DVD, and not just the feature presentation.

I have seen "Last House on the Left" and even with cuts I found it to be quite shocking, but then again it isn`t my cup of tea :)

RE: How often does your Sky+ box let you down ?

Hi Wad,

I`ve had my Pace V.2 box for almost 5 months now (I think) and so far so good. I record programmes almost everyday using Series Link and have never had one failed recording on the digibox`s part. The one failed recording I have had was due to a schedule change.

Before the recent EPG update (there is another on the way - part 2) my digibox had never locked up but did afterwards (once). However, after resetting the box everything has been OK since - no problems whatsoever.

It may be worth noting that all digiboxes do need resetting once in a while.

I think I have been very lucky with the box I have as I know there are a fair few `dodgy` ones out there (a.k.a. Sky Dodgybox) :)

Do you have any idea what is causing the box to report "Technical Fault"? I would assume it is referring to its HDD causing problems. Perhaps calling Sky and asking for a replacement box would be a good idea?

RE: MOBO Award !

I think it has been stated that white people have won MOBO awards? MOBO stands for "Music of Black Origin", so I would assume anyone within said genre would qualify for an award, whether black or not.

RE: MOBO Award !

and `being British` is...????

I was expecting that exact question from someone. Why do you ask such a question? Is there a problem with being British? Are you anti-British?

Do you want me to tell you that being British is spouting out "Rule, Britannia!", getting very drunk, perhaps into a fight, and shouting out racist chants?

Being British means different things to different people. Britain has a mass of history to be proud of... and some not to be so proud of (depending on your personal view).

Adam Walby

RE: MOBO Award !

I think in order for people to integrate into British society more `comfortably` we need to banish the patronising notions of political correctness and `multiculturalism` constantly blurted out by the liberal left.

A multicultural society is a society of different cultures - a society where almost enforced segregation breeds because there are many different groups of people. Anyone living in Britain should have a right to continue their county of origin`s culture and religion, but they and everyone else should be united by one common `interest`: Being British.

Political correctness is something we do not need in Britain. What we do need is common sense.

Adam Walby

RE: Problems with Sky Plus and PIN number...

the film I was watching was a PG, and it also did it while I was watching some Poker (recorded from about 8pm)!?

Not sure about PIN request for a PG-rated film (unless it is set-up in your Viewing Restrictions), but Sky has a 8:00 p.m. watershed, not 9:00 p.m.
