My new Lecson DVD900

mostlyharmless (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 5th October 2000, 12:22

I have recently purchased the Lecson DVD-900 from Debenhams, as it came out well in the recent review, and the Yelo is sold out. I thought I`d share my thoughts on it in case anybody else was considering it ...

I can confirm that the machine can handle Multi-region (using the Warfdale 750S hack) (Note, the hack in the Total Dvd review was wrong).

The machine has two scart sockets.

VCD plays OK.

It is supposed to be able to play CD-R/RW and MP3 Cd`s, but I have not tried these yet.

It can converts NTSC to PAL for region 1 discs, but it is slightly jerky (playback is fine if you use NTSC). It also can handle PAL60.

As this is my first DVD machine, I cannot tell how well the picture quality compares with other machines. All I can say is that I have not had any problems and I have not noticed any obvious picture problems. All in all, I am very hapy with the machine.

The hack in Total DVD was wrong because they were *told* by someone who works for Lecson that this machine was identical to the Wharfedale 750 but with a DD decoder, this was before the 750s came out. Like all good quality magazines they just believed it without trying it out.

Does this mean that the Lecson is the same as the 750s, and I could have saved a couple of quid ? (I don`t know what spec the 750s has).

Almost the same, the Lecson has a DD decoder built in (I believe) which is why its a bit more.

Having recently quit mt job at Debenhams Media & Entertainment Dept. in Croydon, I can give you the real deal on the Lecson DVD 900...

The spec given out in the first message is spot on and the machine is yours for £199. There were a few returns to us of players for various reasons. Some were due to the lame performance on audio CDs (but please! Surely that`s not what you`re buying your DVD player for). Another had dodgy phono sockets that came out (probably a one off) but at least the sockets are gold. The multi-region hack works perfectly. The best thing I suppose is that it comes with a free two-year warranty that covers the lot (inc. accidental damage) so you can`t go wrong.

Aestetically,it doesn`t look nearly as good as the more expensive machines but it`ll do a very good job for picture and sound and is, with the waranty, the best buy for a budget DVD player in my opinion.

P.S - Debenhams did `bung` What Hi-Fi. `Stuff` magazine liked it too though. If you do buy one from Debenhams in Croydon - tell`em Phil sent ya

I am very happy. My Lecson has played everything I have thrown at it, apart from variable bit-rate MP3`s. I have tried normal MP3`s at a bitrate of 196 with no problems.

I agree that the Audio sounds OK. I am not a Hifi buff, and I was playing the audio through my telly, so I can`t say how it compares to other CD players.

I`d recommend this machine to anybody who is looking for a budget player, even without know about the 2 year warranty !

Problem is, trying to actually get hold of one. For some reason Debenhams seem to think the South-East of England doesn`t deserve a a Media Department. Consequently, I`ll have to drive to bloody Crawley or Croydon to get one. Discrimination I call it :-(

Its even more annoying when I can go to my local Tescos and buy a Wharfie off the shelf with the Sunday shopping, or, at least I could if it wasn`t under six feet of water.

So, Crawley here we come `cos I`m strapped and the other half`s got a Debenhams card.
