Chinese DVD`s :-(

Roksan (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 18th July 2001, 07:58

I have have just returned from a working trip to China, where I obtained several DVD`s for about a quid each!!! (needless to say, they must have been created by a gentleman with an eye patch and a parrot on his shoulder). These discs are readily available in high street shops - in fact, I was unable to find anywhere selling cotia discs.
On trying to play these discs in my Pioneer DV535, my Pioneer has locked up! The player will no longer play my genuine region 1 or region 2 discs either - the display just locks on `menu`. Has anybody else had any similar experiences? Could these questionable Chinese discs really have scrambled the memory of my Pioneer, or is it purely coincidence that my player has gone for a burton on trying to play these discs? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I was in China in feb and bought the very same type of dvd`s and have had no problems playing them on my Tosh 2109. Some tend to break up slightly but thats all. I also bought an aiwa XD DV170 while in Hong Kong and it plays everything perfectly. The guy in the shop said that it plays copied discs whereas some will play them but the quality isn`t as good. So it could just be coincidence. Hope this helps.

Nas.

Stoney - they could well be DVDs and most probably are. Blank DVDs only cost £20 each if you make them yourself, but the cost is significantly less if a factory is printing them (Less than £1).

Think about it - how else would we be able to buy them for less than £20 then hmmm?

They are mass produced pirate DVDs. Yep.

Just wanted to say that. Please forgive me!

Hmmm Pirate DVD`s less than £1 each.... surely even mass produced the pirates cant make a profit at that price. In malasia a friend of mine gets videocds for about £1-2 each. Either way I think the Pioneers laser has been given the run around and is shagged :(

Yes, I`m sure they are DVD`s. The same shops also sell the VCD`s, but these really aren`t worth picking up. They range from c**p at the top end of the scale - down to copies which have been taken with a camcorder in the cinema! It all adds to the home cinema atmos I suppose when you see cigarette smoke in the air, and the guy in front gets up to take a leak!
If the blank discs are produced in China, then the cost will be very low - I agree they probably couldn`t import them for less than a quid.

Colleagues of mine who were on the same trip have played their discs OK (on different machines to mine), and the discs definately play as a DVD - not a VCD.

My Pioneer is back in the hands of the suppliers for repair - they seemed to know what the problem was when I described the symptoms over the phone.

Stoney,

I`m no dvd expert but I know a dvd from a vcd. The actual cost of the dvd`s from China at present is around 75-80pence. Yes pence. I should know I bought them myself and have had some more sent over recently with a work mate. Swordfish, Mummy Returns, Pearl Harbour.etc.
