1st Opinion of the Wharfedale G5 & the probs??

Stoney (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 26th May 2001, 20:07

Got the G5 DVD player from tescos and did some comparisions against my ageing Pioneer 525. The picture & Sounds were very impressive on the G5. Now im not no techie but the colours were sharp & vibrant. At the very least it was as good as the pioneer. ( I was goin to get the new Pioneer DV340). The G5 multi regional hack worked with no problems and it played every dvd i had ok. (inc Galdiator disk2, Something About Mary, Matrix).

The only problem im having is that the top part of the screen wobbles (1st 30 lines) on all R1 cds. This must be something to do with 60hz. I have tried all the available options but no joy even though my 525 displayed them on the tv fine. I own a 32" Hitachi w/s tv. The picture is fine if i change to pal50 (yes the wharfie is one of the very few that can convert ntsc to pal50 but i notice a slight stutter on some scenes.

The player worked ok on my brothers 28" Phillips w/s TV. Any suggestions? I would really like to fix this problem as I dont really want to take it back :).

Ps

The wobbles sounds like PAL60 incompatability. The stuttering is perfectly normal / unavoidable and is caused by 1 in 6 frames being dropped to change from 30 fps (actually 29.97) to 25 fps.

Hope this helps.

BTW don`t you mean the M5?

Yeah, he does mean the M5. Tesco`s do another budget player called the Minalto G1, so it`s easy to see where the confusion occurred !

Stoney - Fruitybone`s reply is pretty much the same answer I gave you at http://www.area450.co.uk/wharfeyproblemdiscs.htm

Definitely have a play around with the settings, but it definitely does sound like an incompatibility issue, sad to say.

Funnily enough another M5 owner also contacted me about this today, and I advised him to switch the SCART output (in the General Set Up menu) to RGB, and to ensure you stuck the SCART from the M5 into the RGB-compatible socket. Weird thing was, his problem was from the bottom up, whereas yours was top down - weird huh ?!

Doh!! sorry Guys I do Mean the M5... messin around with the back of the player & the TV must have spun me head. I have tried absolutely everything, used all the available options & configurations but no joy. It must be def a incompatibility issue. Either way Im going to keep it as it only affects R1 disks. Most are w/s with borders on top & bottom so I dont see the wibble. If a cd is not w/s ill just switch to PAL50!.

Funny tho as the M5 works perfectly on an old tosh portable & not a 8 month old Hitachi 32" TV. Other than that m8s I really would recommend this over anything that costs upto £250 inc Pioneer 535 & 340. It also plays CD-RW for those interested even though it doesnt mention it on box. Maybe Area450 could come up with a bios update to fix the 60hz probs?? as im sure i wont be the only one having probs.
