John Lewis and price matching generally

Dan Bates (Admin) posted this on Tuesday, 15th May 2001, 10:49

Does anyone have experience with these "not knowingly undersold" deals at John Lewis and some of the other big traders ?

I have my eyes for a friend on a Sony widescreen TV, which is by far the cheapest at www.sdb-electronics.co.uk - They quote £799 online, and then when you phone them up, it`s £750 ! I know they`re the best prices, and I bought a TV from them when I lived in London. However, they`re based in Chiswick, which is a long way to go just to buy a TV. I`d like to buy it from a local (Cambridge) retailer and get the price matched. What are my chances ? Are there restrictions about Internet prices etc ? Just wondered if people had tried this sort of thing.

I seem to remember John Lewis`s sign saying something about the other prices having to be local and from high street sources. Think you`re screwed there I`m afraid. It makes sense I suppose as John Lewis would be leaving themselves open to all sorts of internet sourced prices.
Here`s a tip though. And this definitely works, as confirmed by myself and friends, and this was tipped off to us by someone who used to work in John Lewis.
Go in, look at the TV you want, then when the assistant asks to help you say " I`m interested in that TV but I`ve seen it at one of the other local electrical shops cheaper ". They`re supposed/obliged to ask you where, but if you say " I can`t remember, it was one of the big ones but I`ll just go round them again until I find it " then 9 times out of 10 they will give it to you for that price rather than have you walk away.
Hope this helps.

John Lewis do pricematch the internet.

Phone up the company (in my case empiredirect) and check its in stock. Take a print off of the screen to JL and ask them to pricematch. Do this at a quiet time (ie not Saturday afternoon) and they will check immediately. It took five minutes and I saved £90 off a TV that was already a decent price. My sister had a similar experience and saved £120 off a 24` Widescreen!

You also get a free Five Year guarentee and in most cases free delivery. The only rule is that the other company must have the item in stock.

Get down to JL see what they`ve got on offer then go and hunt for a bargain. They also have a decent range of Amps, all in one systems etc.

I concur with Simian here. I bought my Sony widescreen from John Lewis in Nottingham (on a Saturday afternoon too!) - took along a printout of the cheapest Internet price (I actually took several which were within about 5 pounds of each other), salesperson went off to check and then returned saying "No problem, here`s your TV at a cheaper price, plus 5 year guarantee and delivery".

The difference between the cheapest price and the most expensive can be frightening (about £400 in that particular case!) John Lewis had the TV for about £150 more than my price.

The fun really starts when you have to get it out of the box, build the stand and then try and get the TV on the stand!!!
