Subwoofer grief......

Fecker (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 11th April 2001, 21:39

Recently bought a Monitor Audio sub ASW-10 120-watt etc..
It was making a bad humming noise. Initially unusable, until I plugged the amps into the same 4-bar (earth loop I think), eventually I had to return it due to a lesser humming noise, prob. mains interference.

Has anyone had similar problems ? Is it endemic on active subs as the geezer in the shop reckoned?

Please tell me I dont have to move house for cleaner mains ! That would be the mother of all upgrades. Anyone tried hi-fi mains "purifers" ?

Fecker,

How do you have the sub connected to your amp?

If via the sub-out phono connection, you should use a screened cable (good quality) and keep it as far away from any mains cables as possible.

I suffered the same problem with my REL until I did the above. No more hum after that.

Regards,
Steve

Yes, connected via decent co-ax from the sub-out on the processor. I tried it in every direction that the 1.5m cable would allow.
I`ll try to borrow a REL from the shop for a test I think.

Thanks

Just keep the signal cable to the sub away from mains leads. mains leads radiate tons of noise that is picked up by the signal leads to the sub and this can cause all sorts of noise, including hum.

Good luck with REL - they are great subs.
