A thought on the opinions on DVD players in this forum

Craig Mellis (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 6th January 2001, 21:08

I have been reading many of the comments people have made about their DVD players in this forum hoping it would help me pick a player to buy.

BUT......

I have noticed something

YOU CANT TRUST MOST OF THEM!

Think about it. If someone is giving an opinion on their DVD player, how likely is it they will say it is below standard. I mean, look at all these people talking about their sub-£200 budget players. While there is no doubt they get the job done, I have heard people saying things like "perfect sound and picture" and "this wipes the floor with even Sony players!" This is not true! These ARE budget players, and after checking them out (especially the scan players) I can vouvh for them being very poor in comparison to, admittedly more expensive, players.

DO NOT LISTEN!

You make some valid points, Craig.

One persons `excellent` is another persons `poor`. I rate my Scan`s picture `very good` on the basis of comparison with a Wharfedale 750S ( which I, and others, considered inferior); moreover it does just look `very good` to me when I watch a DVD. I has much better picture quality than VHS movies on my nearly new Panasonic VCR, which I always considered quite good enough anyway.

My rationale in getting a Scan was that I had a requirement to play MP3`s in the home and will probably replace the player in 1-2 years anyway. So I wanted a cheap machine with good MP3 features - the Scan doesn`t disappoint. The `independent` reviews aren`t bad either (see the review of the Scan cloned `Manhattan` on this web site). The downside with the Scan is that you can`t buy it on the highstreet and so you encounter the usual `mail order` problems when something goes wrong.
If you are a real DVD movie fanatic then just go out and buy a Sony.

The unfortunate aspect of this forum is its small following of brain-dead morons who post only negative and crass abuse. But then I guess its better that they amuse themselves here rather than out on the streets (look upon it as a contribution to `care in the community`).

Neither do some of the abusive characters who post on here - judging by the volume and timings of their postings.

Well, try checking out my posts and then tell me you can`t trust it!
(oh, while you`re at it, look at some of the other owners of the now famous Aiwa 370 and see how many are unhappy)

Otherwise..as you seem to be a "branded" chappie, do feel free to visit me in store for your future purchases..:o)

(I feel a huge increase in my stores "margin" performance coming up......ooops, there`s me giving away that part of the name brand price is PROFIT!!!!!)
But then, ya can`t trust me anyways! lol

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!

It`d be wrong of me not to add my contribution here.

I`ve never proclaimed that the Encore 450 is the world`s greatest player, and certainly it could never be expected to compete with the likes of Sony, Pioneer and hell, even Hitachi as well.

I think for the 175 notes that I forked out for the player is money well spent. Okay, it`s not going to be perfect at that price, and as Craig rightly points out, you`re not going to get the moon on a stick.

I think it`s kinda cool that people are so passionate about their players. OK - some do take it to silly extremes, but on the other hand Jimbo`s enthusiasm for the Aiwa 370 has largely resulted in a very content band of followers.

The point I`m making is this - the world of DVD is escalating rapidly, in terms of availability of hardware, and reducing rapidly in terms of cost to the geezer on the street. Thus, what seem to be bargains one day suddenly become fossils in the space of six months.

Jimbo may have been made to look very silly if the 370 had flopped - I`m really glad it didn`t, because I really hate seeing the posts on these forums about people with players giving them untold s***.

If forums such as these didn`t exist who knows what players people might have ended up with. For all I know we could all have ended up with Himage DVD players from Richer Sounds, God help us.

At the end of the day we`re all capable of making our own minds up. It`s good to see a bit of passion about DVD players - websites from Jimbo, Dukey and IT Troll prove this point. However, we shouldn`t feel we have to vindicate our choice to all and sundry.

Banter - definitely, downright insult - most definitely not. It`s a fine line, but I think we all know the real score : budget players are just that - budget. Mid/top-range models are also just that - a cut above. Don`t forget that, people !

This coming from a man who has not been able to watch a single DVD
over the holiday period because is scan broke yet again , yet he still cant see what a unrelaible machine it is, and still trys to push it on this forum.

Also when anybody complains he brands them morons, yet nelly uses a sony, but this dim wit still does not get the picture! in more ways than one.

Buy a branded name , you get what you pay for! buy cheap buy twice!

The scan owners will learn this lesson but it will take a long ,long time for it to sink in.

Obviously you are one of the lucky people who don`t have to work late or do overtime to cope with their work demands. Also it is amazing how many things you can do almost at the same time using the Alt-Tab keys!

Wake up and drink some coffee MicroStar :P
