BEWARE SCAN UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ironduke (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 30th December 2000, 19:10

Home Cinema Online has updated its news again.
I read on these forums that the Video D/A fix for the scan and manhattan totally fixes the artifacting problem?

This is not true, it does remove some of the artifacts, but the picture still shows others and is generally considered poor where it was crap!

If you after a scan for it`s features and price and dont expect too much of the picture then the SC2000 may be what you want.

But it has a cancer inside it, called the ESS decoder chipset and this is the root of the pixelation problems!

Nelley if you really want to fix the scan rip that ESS sack o s*** chip out of your players and slap in a C-Cube or Zoran Chipset, and your returns will decrease!

BEWARE OF ESS CHIPSET PLAYERS IF YOU WANT GOOD PICTURE QUALITY!

This aint a joke this time Bear, ESS should be shamed for releasing inferior quality products, the chinese may think its good, but then we sell the chinese the stuff that doesnt meet our standards.

At the end of the day scan had to have the mpeg card changed to support the ASU7172 D/A chip, the problem they have now is the ESS decoder has a built in CPU, zoran and C-Cube need an external CPU and that is why the perform better as the ESS tries to do too much!

How else could you explain it when the ESS is 32bit and the C-Cube is only 20bit processing?

The ESS should be more efficient but it is not as it has to handle all the boards messages and processes.

Go on bear give us one of your cheeky chappy scan remarks:P

When I received my Scan back in November I compared it with a one-week-old Wharfedale 750S belonging to a friend. We used the same TV (Panasonic WS - RGB inputs) and the same discs. The Scan clearly outperformed the Wharfedale on both picture and sound. We later had the opportunity to make a comparison against a Pioneer player and found the Scan to be at least equal in terms of picture quality. On that basis my friend returned his Wharfedale and purchased a Scan, with which he is well pleased.
I believe that the Wharfedale uses the Zoran chipset.
I am not qualified to argue the merits of different chipset architectures, but I suspect that there is more to picture quality than simply which chipset a player uses.

Afraid not old chap!

The wharfdale S uses the Zoran!
The Standard Wharfdale doesnt!

Yes overall the scans picture is pretty good but the C-Cube and Zoran dont suffer from the very noticeable pixelation that happens with your scan!

DOes your scan suffer from pixelation?

(If you say no you are a liar and I will cast you as a blackguard!)

I am afraid the facts are with me old boy:P

Your are right about numerous components, its just that the ess falls aprt with all of them.

Pop Magnolia into your DVD to see your scan founder.

I am pointing this out to potential scan & manhattan owners as I have heard Nelley and the Manhattan guy say they have been fixed!
When they have not, simply improved to poor.

I`m confused again!

The Hitachi 705 and MiCO both utilise a C-Cube ZiVA 3.0.

Does that mean the Hitachi has the `alleged` grainy picture too?

What other factors affect picture quality???

MiCO Does It All !!!

So carrot your mico is grainy!
not just in pause mode eh?

Alot of things can effect picture quality carrot.

how accurate is the optical reader
the mpeg decoder
the digital to analogue converter etc..

`alleged` dear boy - ALLEGED!!!

Optical reader I think is a no-no. Cant see it myself.

D/A maybe, but that too is made my ZiVA (or is it built in to the 3.0?).

Hitachi = Grain Silo.

MiCO Rocks - Just wish it could do MiniDVD.
