Insert a DVD and let it start to play
Press Stop
Press Menu
Press Stop
Press Bookmark
Press menu
Press 597 then Exit

this is exactly what i did and my player now goes through my vcr.

DVD`s play through the VCR, but the macrovision still prevents recording - what firmware version are you using? - I`m on 004.
Upgrading to 005 has made no difference.
