Samsung 709 & RCE help required

Deadman (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 22nd June 2001, 10:01

Can anybody help me???.

I have a remote control region hacked Samsung 709 and i was wondering if anybody out there can tell me if it will play those darn RCE discs.

Your help will end months of suffering and provide help to many 709 owners (maybe!!).

My Samsung 709 is my best friend and he wants to experience some RCE action, but feels he can`t, please help him (and me!).

Cheers The Deadman & Samy 709 :)

The 709 has no problems with RCE discs Had Charlies Angels R1 for a while and the Sammy plays the film and extras with no problems at all.

No workarounds or tricks needed.

Yup!. Plays the Patriot R1 and R2 no problem when set to multiregion. Now the interesting question is why does this little gem (macro free may I remind you) have no difficulty with RCE when multiregion hacked when a host of other players do. What is it about the reponse to the RCE interrogation in this case that lets it slip through? Answers here please.

Simple. Samsung had the foresight to make the 709 default to Region 1 when in Auto mode if a "Region 0" disc is inserted. The RCE discs appear to the player as Region 0, hence the player sets itself to Region 1, hence the RCE disc sees the 709 as a Region 1 player and allows the film to be played.

Many other makes of player either default to some other region (usually 2) or become "region free" when a Region 0 disc is inserted, meaning RCE discs can`t be played unless there`s a manual override.

Excellent. Now is this a firmware thing since some other hacked players also have no difficulty with RCE, the Wharfy 750s for instance?

Yep, it`s entirely a firmware thing - the region checking and setting is all done in firmware.

This may seem like a stupid question, but I`m new to this technology - so bear with me.
I`m about to hack my 709 so I can play R1 discs, but have a few Q`s. Can someone please help!

1. During the hack, if I set the 709 to R1 will it still play my R2 discs? or do I have to set it to Region free?
I am asumming that Region free means it will play any region???

2. Once hacked, is the 709 set for good or do I need to reset if I switch between R1 and R2 discs?

I hope someone can help as I am a bit apprehensive of `messing` with the player.
Thanks a lot

Steve
