Got cut up on a roundabout by a 4wd with trailer....

retrogeezer (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 21st November 2007, 18:53

Really peeed off, pulled onto a roundabout alongside a bloke pulling a horsebox type thing, him on the outer lane of the roundabout, me on the inner lane to go around to the 3rd exit (and indicating)

Bloke not indicating, goes past 1st exit then veers to the right straight across my lane forcing me onto the roundabout (as I`m trying to avoid a collision) and his trailer wheels catch my front bumper and rip it off.

The guy just carried on oblivious and I had to chase him flashing my lights and beeping to get him to stop.

He was completely unaware he had had a collision and kept saying `where were you then??`

So, he wasn`t indicating, he `straight lined` the roundabout and obviously didn`t check his mirrors otherwise he would have seen me. Just as well it was not a cyclist.

Anyway, no-one stopped to be a witness (all too busy I guess) and my insurer says roundabout collisions are very hard to decide blame.

I would have thought that the fact I had to chase him was enough but if he says he stopped it`s my word against his.

Is there anything I should do to try and help my case??? The car is not even that bad, I`ve drilled a hole into the underside of the wing a screwed the bumper back on and it hardly notices.

Really hacked off if it goes as a strike against my 2 claims in 3 years thing. >:(

As the insurance says it`s difficult to know - and sadly they often go knock for knock. However, and you won`t like this..... you shouldn`t really be on the inside lane going for the third exit............

What do you mean?? I am going around the roundabout so indicate right and get in the lane closest to the actual rounabout - then you indicate left and once around the roundabout and approaching the exit?? You don`t drive all the way around a roundabout on the nearside lane?? What on earth would be the point of the other lane??

Found this, and this is how I was negotiating the roundabout...will amend original post to say left & right lanes..

Quote:
To Turn Right (leaving at the third exit)
Indicate right and approach the roundabout in the right-hand lane
Keep to the right-hand lane on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
Signal left after you have passed the exit before the one that you want.

You are correct. Driving my truck I get p***ed off on a daily basis by morons who can`t use something as simple as a roundabout. Who the hell uses the left-hand lane to turn right? (Oh, except, foreign trucks)

(and foreign cars)

(And old drivers)

(and women)

(Speaking from experience here, not bigotry)

SJ, when he says `inner lane`, I think he means the inside (central) lane on the roundabout, not the `inside lane` as in motorway driving.

thats exactly what I mean....for some reason I can`t edit my original post (weird connection issue)

But I`m describing it as rings eminating from a centre point - inner ring (lane) outer ring (lane)

Sorry retro - you`re totally right - in the "him on the outer lane of the roundabout, me on the inner lane to go around to the 3rd exit (and indicating)" - I didn`t read the `of the roundabout` bit....

Hope you get it sorted..

Wow - so it`s not just me that`s noticed more people seem to want to turn right at a roundabout from the left hand lane! Sometimes even when there are fecking huge white arrows in the lanes, one pointing left, one pointing straight/right.

Don`t they teach roundabouts in driving tests anymore?

It did happen to me once on a roundabout where someone totally cut me up, forcing me and the police car behind me to stop on the roundabout. Once the driver had obliviously carried on to his destination the last thing I saw in my rear view mirror was the blue lights come on and the police follow him - hopefully to pull the idiot over, but it was too far away for me to see properly by then!

I feel for you retro.

Similar thing happened to me in a Tesco car park, 4x4 with horse box ripped across the front of my car, completely oblivious and I watched him do it, but had the little one in a push chair at the time, so couldn`t chase after.

There are a number of (large) roundabouts where I live, and the number of people that join a roundabout and go all the way around on the outside to the last exit astound me >:(
There is another one with 3 lanes, where people cut straight across to the next exit, crossing into the middle lane straight out to the next exit. B[at]ts@ds >:( >:(
To be honest, I don`t hold out much hope for you, but good luck.

That`s leaving the scene of an accident. Call the police and give them the number plate.
