Phantom Menace - Just out of curiosity, does anyone FAVOUR this film to the others?

I know, daft question, but ever since I got The Phantom Menace on dvd I`ve wondered if anyone prefers this over the other 3?

My favourite is The Empire Strikes Back, but I`m just curious (or nosey) to know how many people prefer Phantom!

TT

I actually quite like it. I think the humour is slightly different from the 3 others and is far more subtle, which comes across better with the DVD.
I know it doesn`t have Luke or Han (Which is maybe the reason people can`t like it as much as the others), but the new characters (excluding Jar Jar) do grow on you.
The two Jedis are not supposed to be like Luke etc... they are true, trained Jedi Knights, so the humour that Luke and Han put across could never be the same in this film. They couldn`t do the slap stick stuff with highly trained Jedis!!
Some of the animal charactors were great, Watto and Subulba are as good as any from the previous films.(In my opinion anyway). The Droids are quite funny as well(Roger,Roger!).

To compare the actually story of the films is unfair, `cos they are all pretty poor really, none are exactly ground breaking literary pieces.

Anyway, here`s my view...
In this order....
Star Wars Episode IV
Star Wars Episode I
Return of The Jedi
Empire Strikes Back

Personally I think Episode IV is the best, since it is a completely self contained movie. When I was young I never liked V much but did enjoy VI, although now I think they are both equally good but have to be viewed in rapid succession.

Judging by the trailers so far, or the second one at least, Episode II looks to be both darker and funnier. Maybe this is Lucas` plan though, to have it very sweet and innocent but with slight darkening undertones for Episode I where Anakin is young and as yet unaware of the dark side, but as we approach Episode III everything will become much darker as he turns into Darth Vader.

Oh and I bloody hope Lucas redoes ALL the stop motion in the original trilogy with CGI for the DVD releases. I think they are the only things that have aged in the films, and they really have aged.

Maybe they should re-do the Sinbad films with CGI too? Clash of the Titans? How about King Kong? Where does it end?

Lucas needs to learn that there comes a time when you have to abandon a film for better or worse. This new habit of constantly tinkering with past projects has got to stop. The replacement of perfectly good stop-motion or puppets with (sometimes less convincing) CGI does a great disservice to the art & skill of the original animators.

Just look at Yoda. Frank Oz IS Yoda. That one CGI shot in TPM of him walking is so obviously not Yoda it`s embarrassing.

IMHO.

Agreed, monged.... and I think too much tinkering leads to hate and hate leads to suffering!

On TPM, I like Jake Lloyd - well, when you see the other two hopefuls in the casting section in the documentary you realise big G *probably* picked the right guy for the job. I think TPM is growing on me, I didnt see it in cinema and saw bits of it briefly when it was on VHS but it didnt appeal to me, however when I got it on DVD for my birthday last week it`s been growing on me ever since and it`s got some sort of charm (?)

Jar Jar Binks is a pain in the ass, though.... :)

"tinkering leads to hate and hate leads to suffering" - LOL, Tom T.

To answer the question of this thread, I rate them V -> IV -> VI = I

The Pod Race and Darth Maul make the whole film worthwhile for me. And Amidala`s outfits. Not too keen on JJB or Qui-Gon, or in fact most of the Jedi council. And Lucas writes crappy dialogue!

I agree that tinkering with the editing, dialogue and structure of a film is bad revisionism. The toning down of violence in Episode IV I totally disagree with, although the additional shots in the end sequence do add to the film.

However the stop motion special effects have really dated and can be easily updated with CGI to look much more convincing without changing the flow of the film. I wish they`d do the same with Evil Dead 2. :)
