ntl. good? or bad? whats the cost

cat in the hat (Competent) posted this on Friday, 5th October 2001, 12:55

So NTL are doing an offer at the moment 2 phone lines and digital tv starting at £20 with unlimited internet, in theory much cheaper than my bt /aol set up but is it any good. Does anybody have the package and have any thoughts.
What are the phone bills like compared to BT, does anybody know of a price comparison site for phone companies?
The basisc package comes with a few digital tv channels but can be added to on a monthly basis at a reasonable charge but i need to pursuade the other half on te phone bill front.
any help greatfully recieved

Ask them for 2 phones and free internet Forget the TV package sky are better for that, I got 2 phone lines free internet just over a year ago and getting rid of BT was the best money saving move I ever did.

The drawbacks are they cut you of after 2 hours of internet use use but you just reconnect again, if you are downloading big files get GOZILLA which takes up again where you left off downoading, also they cut you off after 5 min use if the computer is idle..ie not downloading or surfing ect, they also won the best internet provider in 2000 (its not a struggle to connect). Phone charges are a bit cheaper then BT and the internet service is truly free! I live in Leicester ( God bless Filbert Street, and all the teams that lose there! us mostly) so if its different in other areas I dont know.

But in my experience brilliant service and good prices

But I only have 2 phone lines and no TV PACKAGE.

Probably not much help in making your mind up, but the interactive TV stuff on NTL takes ages to come up, sometimes not at all, meaning you have to switch the damned thing off and on every now and then. The program listings aren`t too helpful either, as they tend to freeze whenever you check whats on a few hours ahead. My mate has Sky and that seems much better on those points, so I`m considering swapping once I find out more about prices.

ntl phone pricing:-

3p/min daytime
2p/min evenings
1p/min weekends

this applies to local and national calls. Calls to other ntl phones in your area should cost a flat rate of 3p

This site might help:-

also each has standard connection charge no matter the length of call - this is 4.9p

But their normal free internet is actually pretty good, v few probs dialling in at any time of day/week. Only disadv is the 2 hr limit, but still for no call charges its good.

Can anybody tell me what there internet connection speed is with NTL.
I have a 56k modem but am only getting 31200 from it. NTL have tried to improve it but to luck.

Also i find the tv package to be quite good, but am seriousley looking at sky digital espec\ially as there is a rumour going round that tey are broadcasting dolby digital soon on the movie channels.

Thanks

Paul

If you`re getting NTL, you`ve got to consider getting cable modem access. I pay £20.00 a month (over the base NTL pack cost) and get a 512K always on connection. I think they do a cheeper option giving you a 64K always on line.

Plus you get free weekend and after 6pm weekday calls to other ntl phone uses as well.
