When applying for car insurance....

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 15th February 2005, 12:23

... if you are over 25 do the costs go down?

I have always been insured under other people ie. girlfriend, parents etc.

So I have never had my own insurance. Looking to get my first own car this year after graduating; the new MG Trophy range at £9,995 is the kind of thing I might consider.

Its just in September I`ll be 25, and I`ve been told that upon reaching that age you don`t pay as much. Is this true?

Oh my God, Bear is driving! How can that be?

Not really, in my experience. I was told the same thing, and they didn`t. I was told that they`d go down when I hit 30 - again, they didn`t!

(It might be worth explorign whether you can get a few years no claims discount by virtur of having been a named driver on someone else`s policy - that`s how I built up my first 3 years worth. You will have to shop around though - even ten years ago, not many insurers did it. Things have tightened up since then so I suspect it will be even harder to find one who still does. It might also be worth talking to a broker, to get them to the legwork for you.)

Firstly,MG give away free insurance for a reason.
Their cars are rubbish.
Seriously,they are terrible cars.
The used car market is bad enough, but it has been flooded with year-old MG`s (it`s a Rover for goodness sake...) which people sell when the free insurance runs out.

Secondly, anyone who opens their insurance renewal envelope, sees that their policy is more expensive then merely tuts and renews anyway is guilty of nothing other than laziness.
Shopping around will almost always get you a better deal which will allow you to switch,or haggle with your existing provider.

Cheers for the advice guys.

What car would recommend up to and around the £10k mark then bowfer?

I found the cost of insurance did drop off when I hit 25.

Basically the younger u are and the less NCD u have the more expensive it`s going to be. Being a named driver on someone else`s policy does not entitle u to any NCD but it may be possible to get an introductory NCD, not sure if 25 is a turning point for cost - again it may depend on the individual insurer. Fact is you have to work yourself up the ladder and as soon as u have full NCD u pay a bit extra to have it protected. Shouldn`t imagine the insurance group for that MG is going to do u any favours. Other than that..............oh damn lost my copy & paste of Bowfer`s remark - still laughing though. Think u may have to heed Bowfer`s advice.

I`m not too `up` on which cars fall into which insurance group.
It`s obvious you`re going to need a low group though. :D
I always take resale values/depreciation into consideration when advising on new cars ( I look after around 10 company cars as part of my job ).
Two I would recommend though are;

New Ford Fiesta.
New Renault Megane (there is a new one out with aircon and CD for under 10K)

Both stylish cars with low insurance groups and good residuals.

Ones to avoid;
MG Rover
Vauxhall
Any Korean make

They lose money faster than Stevie Wonder playing roulette.

try renault clio, fiat punto, or similar sized cars, many dealers have special offers that include free insurance at the moment...

you may laugh but have you considered a new

Chevrolet (Daewoo) Kalos or others in the range...

Free insurance, 3 years warranty, 3 years AA cover etc, etc...

I bought a Daewoo Nexia new in 1997... and still have it now as a second car, and i cannot fault either the vehicle or the dealership!

I also bought a Renault Clio new in 2001... and still have this, it has had over £3000 spent on it under warranty!

Its over to you...

Does it have to be new?

I`d give serious thought to an old-shape Ford Focus - you`d get a lot of car for £10K - possibly even one of the sporty ST170s, if it was 12-18 months old with reasonable mileage.

For a "sensible" car, the Focus drives very well, won`t cost you an arm and a leg in insurance (although that may be less true of the ST170!) and is reasonbly cheap to maintain and run.

Or if you want a sportier car, consider a second hand Clio 172 (or the newer 182) - a good used one will be well within your budget.
