Currys MasterCare for PC`s Long over due Update!

Sammy Valtino (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 12th May 2001, 18:46

Hi, i bought a PC from Currys a few years ago now and purchased the extra cover (for about 250 for 5 years, you can start laughing now) I never really had a problem with it till the other day. I dropped it down the stairs while moving it upstairs. The covers says it covers accitently damage. My question really is has anyone had any problems claiming from then before (MasterCare)? The PC is very old now (P150Mhz 16 RAM) They won`t beable to get parts for it now cus i think the motherboard has broken it half, so will the give me a new PC? Thanks in advance.

If they can repair it, they will.
if they can`t, (ie: parts unavailable, too much damage etc.) they won`t actually physically replace it, but they will issue a "voucher" to be used in store for what they deem to be the replacement value.

Before you start panicking that it`s only worth a £100 or so, they take it on how much it`ll cost you to replace the unit with it`s current equivalent.

I`m in the trade, and have a few friends in Currys/Dixons, and trust me, if the unit is irrepairable, they`ve seen some really silly replacement voucher prices that far exceed the worth of the unit and the cost of the cover combined!!

They usually even give a voucher for the unexpired portion of the cover if it`s used against a replacement cover!!

Yep, £250 seemed expensive at the time...once they repair or replace, then see what it`s actually saved you!

(PS: that`s the most common excuse for accidental damage on a PC! lol)

Accidental damage is only covered for tha first year, i would NOT advise anyone to buy a pc from pcword/currys/dixons as their attitude after u have bought a pc, is total pants....all they want is money through the till, dont care what happens then

And they also charge a fortune for this mastercare s***e, this is where they make their £££.

And to phone mastercare you gotta pay 50p - £1 per minute, and they could be based in Scotland or somewhere...

apart from Mastercare, are you covered by your household insurance?

I`ll be fascinated to see how Currys get out of this one, because your computer`s so far down the foodchain now they`ll have trouble fixing you up with a low enough spec machine to avoid making a loss. Read the fine print on the claim form carefully and tell us how you get on.

Come to think of it, they`ll probably be able to find a junker somewhere to palm you off with. Sorry to sound negative, but Stan Kalms didn`t get where is by being a nice guy.

This is the kind of misinformed posting that gets all of us in Retail a bad name!
>"Accidental damage is only covered for tha first year, i would NOT advise anyone to buy a pc from pcword/currys/dixons as their attitude after u have bought a pc, is total pants....all they want is money through the till, dont care what happens then"

Accidental Damage is NOT covered by a 1st year manufaturers warranty, and most extended Gtee`s with Acc. Dam. ADD it to the first year.
I checked it out with me mates, and Currys Coverplan IS one of these, therefore ACC DAM is covered for the LIFE of the Coverplan!

>"And they also charge a fortune for this mastercare s***e, this is where they make their £££."

Nope, it adds to their profits, yes, but trust me, they make their money in other ways too. And as to costing a fortune, wait and see how this guy gets on first!!

>"And to phone mastercare you gotta pay 50p - £1 per minute, and they could be based in Scotland or somewhere..."

Only if it`s a software fault, NOT hardware. They have 3 lines in place.
Internet: Premium Rate
Software: Premium Rate
Hardware: Standard National Call Rate.
And they`re based in England, but it doesn`t matter where you call from as the National Rate call applies.

But even if they were based in Scotland, what`s the point of mentioning it?

sorry to drone on folks, but you know what I do for a living, and it annoys me when someone posts the wrong information especially when someone has a genuine problem.

if you have a genuine problem with a retailer, then scream out loud about it!!
I would be the FIRST to back you up and give any advice I could get my hands on!
Don`t just throw in stuff because you "think" you`re right though!

Jimbo - accidental damage IS for the first year only, unless you pay extra, i was told this by the staff in pc world

Have you actually bought a pc etc...from the likes of PC World ? Doesn`t look like you have...

I have and my m8 did years ago, i dropped my pc, guess what they wouldnt give me a new one and said it was my fault

You are talking exactly like a currys spokesman would and not through the eyes of the consumer
