Freeloader - can it play "copied" games?

Garf (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 5th June 2003, 11:53

Hi

One of the games I was working on was canned about a month from completion. I`ve managed to grab the last NTSC build we burnt to GC disc, will Freeloader let me play it on my PAL gamecube?

Cheers for any help,

Garf

No.

What game was it btw and who do/did you work for?

I guess it depends how "copied" it is. If you`ve just burnt it yourself onto a GC-style disc, no chance. But if it was properly burnt using whatever technology and methods they use to burn the production discs, it might.

if it boots on an NTSC cube then yes, freeloader will play it on a PAL cube.

We burnt the builds onto GC discs, which work with the NTSC devkits. Don`t think it would work on a "normal" NTSC cube though, so probably no chance of me ever playing it again :(

The game was BattleBots for THQ, one of about 20 products they canned due to their alleged financial difficulties. Bit of a shame, as we`d been working on it for about 16 months.. sigh. The company I work for is Creative Asylum

there`s some info about the game on our site.

Cheers for the replies :-p

What are these GC blanks like? Do you burn them with standard hardware (such as a DVD-R writer), or do you have to use a special device made by Nintendo themselves?

There was supposed to be a free Freeloader with the issue of Cube magazine that came out yesterday, so you might as well give it a try!

Mike - not sure what they`re burnt on, it was usually our producer who handled that. I presume it`s some kind of special kit, but I could be wrong.

And I had a look at the free freeloader with the Cube magazine, it says it only lets you play Animal Crossing NTSC though :(

Pistol the free Freeloader is only for Animal Crossing

Yeah I found out after buying it... bummer. Still, the Metroid Prime cheats were useful. Looks like they`re going to do a one-game Freeloader each month - though at £4 a shot and at the rate they come out, it`d probably be better just to buy a proper Freeloader or Action Replay if you want to play imports when they`re released on NTSC.
