Buffy Season 2 picture quality

ickle yoda (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 15th May 2001, 23:03

I have seen the first season of buffy on dvd and noticed that the picture is a little grainy because of the original quality of film used to record the programme ( so i heard ) . Anyway whats the quality like on season 2? Is it the same or have they improved the picture? Whats the extras like as well interesting? My girlfriend loves this programme but has the seasons on video but she is still thinking about buying it on dvd, what can i say shes a fan. Any comments would be appreciated.

it`s similar - it`s jsut because of the film stock tho, the compressions jsut fine - no strange shadow effects past film grain.

and the menus are rather pretty :)

bit of a haul though trying to get through more than one disc a day!

They used the same film quality for seasons 1+2

Season 3 the was better film, and as far as i can tell 4 +5 were improvements again. Don`t expect miracles though, cos whatever tv show it is they rarely use movie quality film - budgetary constraints.

Apart from ER, the new series is even in wide screen!

can`t remember any problem with buffy season one ,seemed ok on the
wharfy 750 i had at the time, but i have to admit to being very disappointed
with buffy season two.the picture quality varies from adequate to appalling,(i`m now using a sony 725).one scene can look ok then the picture becomes very grainy, then becomes ok again ? how can this be down to the type of film stock used ? also there seems to be a strange sort of trailing ghost image which i`ve never seen before,i`ve only had chance to try the first disc so far,can only hope the later disc improve.

It`s particularly bad on Disc 1, but it does improve. Check out the "Do I have a case against Amazon" thread on this forum for more info...

Well BTVS season 3 is in anamorphic widescreen and if the BBC screened versions are anything to go by, we will be very happy with the DVD quality when it comes.

The first 2 episodes on Disc 1 (the ones that appear to be of poorer quality) have been encoded on a field-by-field basis. All the others have been done on a frame-by-frame basis.

BTW: BBC showed Season 4 in widescreen, but it`s now believed that they didn`t show season 3 in widescreen as it wasn`t made in widescreen, it just had better quality film.
