Brazil – advice please

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 22nd July 2003, 18:10

The film, not the country.
I know a region 2 version has just come out that IS anamorphic and is listed as 137 mins. The legendary Criterion director`s cut IS`NT anamorphic but is 142 mins.
So.... Is the region 2 version not the director`s cut? If not then what`s missing?
Has anyone seen the 3-disc version for less than £29.99 (CDwow).
Is the 3-disc version worth the extra? (are all the extra bits and pieces watchable?)
Any advice appreciated.

i don`t have multi-region, so i had little choice, but i think it is likely that the 3 disc set is worth the cash. i`ve heard it`s pretty wonderful. actually, isn`t Brazil R0 on Criterion? i still couldn`t be bothered with the hassle mind. Yeah, the picture is anamorphic, but it depends if you like extras.

on the timing, that is simply the fact that PAL is faster than NTSC, so it is exactly the exact same, just PAL is 4% faster.

The Criterion release is NTSC, and with the 4% time-difference between PAL/NTSC they are the same (ie both are uncut).

You should really get the 3-disc Criterion `boxed` set as the extras as SUPERB, even though it isn`t anamorphic.
Check out the extras here: http://www.criterionco.com/asp/release.asp?id=51§ion=feature

Hope it helps

Edit: And yes, it`s R0. =)

Thanks chaps, I was tending towards the 3-disc version (and it`s for my birthday so what`s price got to do with it?!)
And excuse my ignorance, but if it`s Region 0, do I just chuck it in my unhacked player and I`m away? Does the NTSC business affect things?
Ta.

if it`s R0, it``l play on any player, anywhere in the world. Now, I`m no expert, but the thing I do know is it is a lower quality than PAL, cos of fewer lines or something. PAL is better, but get you`re setup correct, and it should be pretty decent

If its region 0 it will start playing as soon as you insert it in your player and all PAL DVD players can play NTSC (ie A R0 NTSC disk will play on all players but an R0 PAL disk might not play on an NTSC player)but you might need an NTSC compatable TV if the DVD player outputs NTSC as NTSC but if it outputs NTSC as PAL60 then you will be able to view it on a PAL only TV

The R2 is the directors cut since this is the European release which was the longer of the theatrical releases due to being handled by a different distributor who didn`t think you could make a blockbuster out of a weird film.
There are a few differences in the introductory credits and slightly longer dream sequences in the Criterion edition but nothing of any significance. I have yet to watch the studios version of the film since its meant to be awful.

Can someone fill me in on the differences between the releases or at least point me in the right direction. I have the R1 version.

Which realease is supposed to be the best/crappiest? Isn`t the criterion release Gilliam`s preferred cut?

There are at least three different versions of Brazil.

The original 142 minutes European release,

A shorter 132-minutes prepared by Gilliam for the American release and another different version, nicknamed the Sheinberg Edit,

Universal`s then boss Sid Sheinberg, against whom Terry Gilliam had to fight to have his version released, or the `Love Conquers All` version.

The Europiean version is Gilliam`s prefered version. So either get the criterion version or the UK`s bare arsed version

According to IMDB all DVD versions of Brazil in the USA are the directors cut.
