Dear Jimmy

From my experience, most discs carry some sort of copy protection. My guess is that Saving Ryan`s Privates has a different type of protection than macrovision.

Disks that contain Macrovision protection will, almost always have a Macrovision logo on either the disk or the back sleeve. Look for this logo that says "Macrovision - quality protected"

My Saving Private Ryan does not contain this logo so I think it may use some other form of copy protect - bastards!

Not all discs have macrovision

Some companies don`t bother with macrovision with cheap releases.

Some companies don`t bother with macrovision with major (high quantity) releases so they don`t have to pay macrovision the $0.05 per disc license fee. ($50,000 per 1 million discs)

Harry Potter is an example of a major release that doesn`t have macrovision to save on costs. In the UK 1.25 million Harry Potters discs were sold on the day of release.

Macrovision is pointless on dvd, as it only prevents analogue copying, with the dvd format macrovision is turned on or off using a single bit flag (the actual video in not macrovision encoded). The dvd player adds a macrovision signal if it detects the bit flag (thats who many region free players bypass macrovision, they just ignore the bit flag)

This could be a new thread - What discs don`t have macrovision?

Anyone with BBC digital should read the Entertainment section. In the DVD reviews there`s a bit about this today.
Seems fewer PAL discs are being protected.

to be honest the macro free machine was not bought for that reason
the shortage of scart sockets on the tv was, or more like to many gizmos
and only two sockets. The dvd player is routed through a vcr only because
i don`t like scart switchers. [manual ones anyway]
DVD player/ VCR/ Freeview/Games Console/ AV Tuner/ all this has to fit
into one tv. i am not to sure whether everything is connected for best results on all input devices i have had to make sacrifices to get others to a viewable level

Macrovision logo

none of my limited dvd collection have the logo.

i am still a little concerned it may be the player.
and that saving private ryan is the only macro protected dvd i own
as i only own a few dvds at present i need to get my hands on a certifeid
macro protected dvd.
