Slimline Technika DVDR 2005. It costs just £79 and the container box does not even mention that it has concealed USB and DVI ports on the front and that it is DIVX VOD enabled.
The USB port is a great enhancement as you can plug in a Flash Drive/memory stick and the recorder will recognise and play or record MP3 WMA and JPG files.
A Brief list of features are:
DTS 5.1 Digital (coaxial or optical)
Dolby 5.1 Digital (Coaxial or optical)
Dolby 5.1 Analogue (6 connectors)
DVI input
USB Input
Progressive or Interlaced scan
JPEG picture view
S Video
RGB
YUV
CVBS
PAL/NTSC
2 Scarts
Record DVD+R, DVD+RW
DIVX
1, 2, 4, 6 Hour record
Plays DVD, DVD+and-R/RW, VCD, CD-DA, MPEG4(Divx), MP3, JPEG and Multi formats.
It even played a Video CD that I have with no menu that I have been unable to play on any DVD player other than a computer.
I think that once word gets around about the featuires of this machine it will sell quickly.
Cheers
PS
COMET are selling a 25 pack of RIDATA DVD+RW for £9.99 and they work with no problems on this machine.

This is a rebadged YAMADA 8400X and is an excellent deal! The cheapest I could find it online is at savapoint for £99.99,its £115 elsewhere!
For anyone who has bought this and needs to make it multiregion then use the following
(courtesy of http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/...ad.php?t=401443)
1. Turn on player (with Standby button on player), without any disc in the drawer
2. When "No Disc" appears on screen, open the tray (I used the button on the player, don`t know if that matters)
3. Press 0, 0, 8, 6, 0, 0, 0 on the remote, then press "Select" on the remote
(the last number is the region setting - 0 for multiregion, other numbers for that specific region) - a 0 should appear on the screen
4. Turn player off (without closing tray first) using the button on the player.
Now when you turn on the player, it will be multiregion. I don`t know if it defeats RCE (haven`t tried it yet), but if it isn`t, try doing the hack again and setting it to the specific region of the disc.
There is a firmware update here : Yamada 8400X Firmware Update, that fixes some recording glitches and adds support for more brands of media.

I`ve used it, and it works - just download the .zip file, extract the .iso and burn to a cdr - the player will recognise it. The machine shuts down after you press OK the last time. I couldnt get mine to come out of standby (I left it for a few minutes), but unplugging it and plugging it back in brought it back to life.
[STANDARD DISCLAIMER] This worked on my machine, if something should go wrong with yours, I in no way accept responsibility (besides, Tesco should take it back if you still have the reciept).[/STANDARD DISCLAIMER]Technika DVDR-2005 @tescos £79

RE: DVD recorder, DivX playback, progressive scan £79 (Tescos - in store only)
Fantastic! ive been looking for a cheap recorder for the Sky+ that i can use also to play DIVX on! thanks!
RE: DVD recorder, DivX playback, progressive scan £79 (Tescos - in store only)
Bought two of these from Tesco Extra, The Meadows, Sandhurst - they have quite a few left - but I wouldn`t bother!
First one
1. refuses to open the tray nine times out of ten
2. whines like a dog when playing anything
3. Tried playing some DIVX files and the thing locked up solid - flashing "HELLO" at me - had to power off and on to get my disc out
4. refused to play any DVD-RW disk I threw at it.
Second unit exactly the same apart from a properly functioning tray that does at least open when you want it to!
Didn`t even bother to try out any recording fuctions.
Got refunds on both of them - told Tesco to stop selling crap like this!
I still have working Compacks and Cyberhome DVD players bought nearly two years ago!
The stuff coming from China can be really crap now - probably nothing wrong with the chipsets that do all the clever work - it`s the drive mechanisms that let these cheap units down - and they seem to be getting worse than ever!

I also had trouble with the tray but I think it was mainly because I didn`t give the machine time to come alive from switch on - I think it does some checks before settling down. The beast does whistle especially when finalising discs but the recordings are pretty good and the price is very competitive.

don`t know if you were just unlucky (a bad batch escaped quality control perhaps) but this is the first complaint I`ve seen about the Tescos machine.
My first DVD player was a Cyberhome which I`ve passed on to someone else and is still going stong. On the other hand there have been lots of complaints about the Cyberhome DVD recorder offered by ASDA, quite a few problems have been noted in this MSE thread here
RE: DVD recorder, DivX playback, progressive scan £79 (Tescos - in store only)
My Grandson bought a Technika DVDR-2005 for christmas from Tesco and this also refused to open the draw at the first few attempts, the main problems other than that are the setup menu`s have noise on the display and when a dvd is written and closed it cannot be read on any other dvd player showing the no disc error, when looking at the dvd on 2 PC`s it has no directory and appears to the pc`s as a blank dvd although plays back ok on the DVDR-2005. Went to Tecso`s today to take it back to be replaced but they are shut till tomorrow. I am still yet to make my mind up on this model
RE: DVD recorder, DivX playback, progressive scan £79 (Tescos - in store only)
I bought one of these (Technika DVDR-2005) yesterday and spent an hour setting it up and connecting it to sky, free view etc and after all that I pressed the open button but it refused to open. I have just been back to Tesco to exchange it and got them to open up a new one and test it, and the disc tray opens/closes without any problems.
The moral of the story?:- before spending time/effort rewiring/setting up everything - TEST IT FIRST to make sure the damn disc tray actually opens!!!!
I have not tested the DVD recording / Divx playback yet so can`t comment on those issues. If I come across any more problems I will post them on here.
RE: DVD recorder, DivX playback, progressive scan £79 (Tescos - in store only)
I have just bought one of these and I am quite happy with it. I am toying with the idea of the firmware upgrade, but its a bit scary! I havn`t managed to veiw any divx yet I have tried but it just says unknown file system. Any ideas
