Magic! Really.

There`s a review in the latest issue of computeractive, for all interested.

If I get the TV Card I can do away with my GF4 Mx 440(VIVO) and get a Radeon 9600 Pro. It doesn`t look like stereo but I don`t have a stereo TV anyway. I was waiting for freeview cards to come down in price but this looks good.

Dabs has some TV cards here for around the same price here

feel free to call me thick...but hey..if ya dont ask ya dont find out eh... ;)

these tv card thingies I take it they allow you to watch tv on the monitor by connecting the `normal` tv aerial to the card? are they straighforward to fit? Ive upgraded my memory myself so I have been inside the case..but not done any major upgrades as such...is fitting something like this a fairly easy job? and do you need a high spec machine for it to work...? theres not much info on the Aldi site regarding the minimum specs...and you can record tv like a video, and then burn it to cd? could you for example connect a video to it and transfer VHS tapes onto a cd?..not so much for copying bought tapes..more for transfering home movies onto a disk...althought with the help of a dvd burner I could have the origional Star Wars trilogy on disk afterall.... oooh.... :D

again sorry if Im asking obvious questions.... :p

cheers!

Hi,

I have a Pinnacle rave TV PCI card.

It has 2 inputs, RF Tv aerial lead, and composite. So on mine you can just plug a TV lead in the back as you would into a TV set. To watch TV on my PC I then just run the app that came with it, and 1st time, had to tune it in.

Fitting is probably easy, i.e. just plug it into a spare PCI slot. So 1st thing you want to do is make sure you have a spare slot.

You`re obviously comfortable taking your case apart, so have a look and see if you have spare slots, they are the ones at the back, existing ones may have a graphics card (although if your PC is fairly new that will prob be in AGP at the top), sound card, and network card.

So you just push the card in fairly firmly (as you did with memory) so the aerial socket is sticking out the back.

Now for your next question about recording, you`ll have to read the back of box :(

PC is old (P2 450) which is fine for watching TV. the manual lists 900Mhz as min for encoding. The better your processor the better quality you can encode it.

I found I can encode about 5 mins of footage, any more than that and it starts to go out of sync :(

You`ll need a big hard drive to store stuff on, and then convert for VCD/DVD.

That`s my experiences with my card/PC, which is similar price to this Aldi one

Cheers for the info Alan,
I think I have a spare slot..I`ll double check before I get one...the memory stuff might be an issue what with my pc not being the greatest machine in the world (256mb RAM, 20gb HD, 1ghz processor) even if I can only watch tv it will be a bonus with not having a tv in the room where the pc is... :)

The processor and ram should be fine I think, but your hard drive isn`t going to give you a lot of recording space. It seems a bit pointless to buy it only for watching TV considering the quality is going to be so poor(interference will be a big problem with a plain aerial).

If thats all you are going to use it for you might be better off getting an external USB one because the aerial won`t need to be so close to the computer so the picture will be more acceptable.
