Free (pretty much) handset on O2...

julianf (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 12th April 2003, 17:34

...just got myself a spanking Nokia 3650 free on a new 12mth contract with O2 from a Phones4U store. You have to take at least a £35 a month tariff (I took 250 Xnet Anytime minutes/50 SMS) but only have to stay on that tariff for 3mths (then I`m moving to 100 Xnet Anytime minutes/100 SMS for £25 - much better for the txters out there!). The other bit to qualify for the "free" handset is you have to pay 3mths insurance on the spot - that was £24 for me - but if you wish you can then cancel the insurance before the 4th month`s payment is taken.

Who - Phones4U? No, otherwise I`d nab me one of those SonyEricsson P800s ;-)

3650=Massive colour screen, java technology, gprs, simbian OS, camera in back, can record video with sound, RealPlayer, polyphonic, loudspeaker function, comes with 16Mb card but you can buy 128Mb ones online...check out the link in original post for full handset details

Try ringing up to see if you can change your tariff BEFORE 3 months, it might save you some cash cos i know people who`ve done that loads of times.

EDIT: Be warned about the insurance, it DOES NOT cover you if you are on licensed property! So get it nicked from a pub and you`re screwed!

Cheers Rob - I`ll give it a go re: reducing the tariff. And credit to the store, they did warn me about the pub scenario...

Kain - please don`t say that !! I`ve had a look on the site and ALL tariffs appear for the 3650 too so I`d say at the very least the same £35 minimum monthly tariff rule applies to the P800...I`d given up on the P800 because of the handset price and after chasing a 3650 completely forgot to ask if the deal applied to the Sony as well...

Anyone know where I stand re: exchanging the handset/cancelling contract if they refuse? Only got it on Friday and still have the protective strips over screen & camera...

get ready.....here it comes.....this is going to be a big one......DOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a 7250 and returned it after 3 or 4 days, I`m sure they have some no quibble 14 day returns thing going but will happily be corrected.
Try it, what have you got to lose? When I said I wanted to return the 7250, they offered me the Panasonic and a few other camera phones at no extra cost, but as I`m starting a new job soon and a mobiles provided, I just needed to cancel the contract and they did this with no questions asked. (Sorry, I assume we`re still talking Phones4U here.)

Well all, I`ve look into it...

The P800 was in the O2 promotion but you had to take a £75 a month tariff for 3mths as opposed to a £35 a month tariff for the 3650.

The P800 deal ended yesterday - don`t know if the 3650 deal`s still going.

Asked about exchanging my 3-day-old 3650 for the P800 and keeping my new contract or cancelling the whole thing and starting over with a P800 - fella said I was looking at about £300 for the P800 handset now whichever way I played it.

Thank God that`s all over - I can learn to love my Nokia again and be happy with my lot (although my loaded brother-in-law is gonna rub his P800 in my face for the foreseeable)

Anyone know what the upgrade to Nokia 3650 is for existing 02 customers with over two years contract is?

My brother paid £50 to upgrade with T mobile - he loves the phone and impressed with the built-in camera and video facility - and excellent sound quality. Only complaint is that the screen scratchs very easily.

Yeah - I thought that scratching might be an issue given how big the screen is so I`ve left the protective strips on so far - they don`t affect the camera lens. I`ve searched everywhere for the official Nokia carry case for the 3650 featured in the user guide but it doesn`t seem available anywhere !! Anyone ?
