RE: WoofDale DVD 750

Hi

I got a 750 about a month ago and it was fine, apart from the drive being a bit noisey. I put it in a glass fronted cabinet and it was fine. Everyone was saying that the 750s was better, but as It was the same price I didn`t think there was much point changing it. However, when I heard about the Gladiator disc 2 not playing and a couple of other problem films, I decided to take it back and see if they would change it. I just said that the drive was too loud and that it crashed when playing Gladiator disc 2. As tescos are just selling them they don`t seem to ask too many questions and it was no probs changing it to a 750s. What surprised me was that the 750s has lots more extras compared to the 750. The OSD is better, there are more zoom levels, 5 more levels of slomo and twice as many speeds for ff and rw. On top of that, the gladiator disc 2 plays fine and I have had no problems with any others.
It might seem a hassle to take it back, but I`m more than glad I did.

Hope this is of some help and that it doesn`t p*ss u off too much!!

Problem with AV channel

Just got a new TV and it works fine. All the normal channels and my cable are all good pictures. Problem comes when I hit AV on the remote to watch my DVD`s. There are three vertical lines going down the screen. They are more like shadows, but you can still see them when a movie is playing. Its not that noticable but when you know they are there, you can`t help seeing them and they detract from the movie. If you turn the brightness down they disappear. The movie is watchable but definitelt too dark. I checked to see if it was the scart but there is no diference. I thought it might be the TV but why do the lines only appear on the AV channel.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Cheers

RE: Wharfedale 28

Lo

Re the cable issue above - I tried it in mono and there was no noise, so it must be the nicam stereo that does it. Don`t know if it would be the same with Sky Digital.

I have played around with the sound setup a bit more and am now more pleased with the sound output. You can increase bass etc by adjusting an Effect, AVL and Loudness setting as well as the bass and treble bars.

Re audio out, i`m not sure. There is a nice feature on the side with a pop out section which reveals the headphone socket. This also has the red white and yellow plugs, labled A/R, A/L and Video, so maybe this is the audio out.

Just watched Gladiator on DVD on it and was well impressed with quality of picture and sound. Definitely money well spent.

Spec of 890

16:9 4:3, user1 and user2. (User 1&2 just seem to stretch the picture upwards more to fill the screen) There is nothing to setup with the anamorphic side of things now. It seems that problem was fixed.

There are 2 scart sockets, Euro AV and AV2.

The tuner has been modified as well and is very simple. I did it all in about 10 minutes.

Teletext also works fine.

You can change sound between mono or stereo.

RE: Wharfedale 28

Lo
Just bought the Wharfedale 890 today. Out of the box it looks fine and setting it up was no probs. The quality of the terrestial channels seems excellent (as in the review it was stated that these weren`t great). There are 4 choices of viewing area and you can customise sound and picture easily. There are presets in the sound setup for movies, speech, music etc or you can use User for your own prefs. There are also presets for the picture, ie daylight, night, soft.
It is a big improvement on my measly 21" TV. Speakers are 2x8rms and are OK for me (I live in a terrace house) Though the bass isn`t strong enough for my liking. I put the volume to what I would consider to be loud and it was only half way on the osd, so, I think its adequate.
I have a Wharfedale 750s DVD and you get an excellent picture and sound and colours seem very good.
Overall I am very pleased and would definitely recommend it considering the price. I`m sure you could get better, but you`d have to spend another couple of hundred quid!
The only niggle I have so far concerns my cable viewing. When you change between channels with the TV remote its fast and quiet. However when I`m watching cable and am using the NTL remote, you get a noise and the volume is loud for about a second when you change channel. I don`t know if this is something to do with the Nicam stereo as it didn`t happen on my other TV. I might have something not connected right or something. On the whole I am well pleased.

Any questions, feel free

RE: Wharfedale 750s - worth getting?????

I just got the 750s myself and would recommend it. Only niggle is the loudness of the drive, but if u put it in a glass fronted cab. its fine. Make sure u don`t pick up a 750 by mistake as some Tescos have them sitting in the same stack. I had a 750 before but took it back and changed it to the 750s. On the 750s there are a lot more extras than on the 750. ie 7 rates of slowmo, 4 speeds of rw and ff, better osd and better zoom mode. It can also play mp3 and has not failed to play any disc that I own, both R1 and R2.

RE: Wharfedale 28

Lo

I too think i`m gonna get one of these from Tescos. The only review I`ve seen was from the link on the Wharfedale site. I did notice the problems that it had with the anamorphic side of things.

However, I was in Tescos yesterday and saw that they now have a 890 model in stock as opposed to the 850. I have searched the net for reviews or even a mention of this, but the Wharfedale site has not ben updated. As it is still the same price, and looks to hav ethe same spec., I presume its just a newer version (like the DVD750 and 750s). Perhaps this model has sorted out the problems mentioned in the review. I think I`ll buy one next week so will let you know what its like.

RE: Wharfedale 750 and RCE - The Facts

Just bought a Wharfdale 750 today from my local Tesco store in Northern Ireland. I did as Steve mentioned earlier and looked at the firmware details inside. Mine is CS=328C like Alteredreality`s. Aside from the Patriot issue, does anyone know if this machine will play region 1 DVD`s?

Cheers
