RE: Scan 440Lsi

Just FYI, and by way of helping keep the thread on-topic <grin>, my 3rd 440Lsi arrived promptly as promised. It wasn`t taped up with Scan tape and I assume, therefore, it was not tested before shipment (as I had asked)... however... it had all the right bits this time (including a real manual!), so that`s a plus.

I`ve tried it with NTSC and PAL videos from regions 1,2,3 and 4 with no problems on the region 0 setting.

I`ve played MP3 and photo CDs without issues (other than the aforementioned JPEG file size limit, which I`m not about to do the upgrade for!). Yet to try VCDs or SVCDs, but so far so good.

It seems that the hardware is essentially OK, but Scan may be overstretching their ability to support the customers they sell to. Perhaps some of their people are overzealous in trying to assist and simply make matters worse (which is what I think happened with the second machine - "oh there`s a unit, we`ll box that up and ship it out"). I suspect that they simply don`t have the time or the manpower (or the inclination?) to properly carry out quality testing, which is a shame when they`re selling (potentially) high-quality products at a reasonable price.

RE: Scan SC-440LSI beware!

All I can say is that Derek and Nilesh from Scan have both listened and responded in a positive manner, more than can be said for some other retailers.

I await the new machine with baited breath and will be testing it extensively over the coming week(s).

IF for some reason I get a third failure, I`d be interested to know the opinions of the group on the best alternatives at a similar price (important factors are: good quality playback, multi-region, support for MP3, VCD, SVCD and customer support!) I guess I should go read throught the hardware reviews first!

RE: Scan SC-440LSI beware!

Latest, as of last night, is that the machine now will not come ouf of standby properly at all. The power light changes from red to green, but that`s it - it`s then dead.

Nilesh - there was nothing stacked on the machine - everything was perfectly cool.

Glad to see there`s a new batch in on Monday. Just some questions:
(a) Will SCAN pay for return this time?
(b) Will SCAN test the unit extensively this time?
(c) It looked to me like the unit had been out of the box as few of the cable ties were on properly and the manual was the wrong one. On top of that, the unit was older than my original one. Is it possible that I was sent a old/repaired unit to keep me quiet?
And one last comment - if this one doesn`t work my fiancee will be demanding her money back and we`ll go elsewhere.

gingerone - to be fair these posts are piling up on one failure... hardly representative. Unless, of course, you know of another forum with hardware reviews on this machine?

wpkenny - thanks for the feedback. Once is bad luck, twice is suspicious, I can`t accept a third failure... we`ll see.

Wish me luck!!

Scan SC-440LSI beware!

I got a scan 440LSI for Christmas from my fiancee... I was, naturally, delighted, never having ventured into the DVD arena before. Getting star-wars I & II at the same time was also a real bonus.

It didn`t work. It played audio CDs but would not play DVDs.

We returned it to scan on December 6th having been promised that it would take 10 days at most and they`d refund the postage charge. They refused to do a turn-around (pick up the faulty one at the same time as delivering a replacement)

It arrived back on the 21st (5 days late), we have not been reimbursed for the carriage for the faulty unit, no apology for the delay.

On arrival, the unit had the DVD drawer partially hanging out, but we eventually managed to get it going. The manual was for the old SL model, which didn`t help.

It plays DVDs (result!), it plays audio and MP3 CDs (nice one), but now it hangs from time to time (3 times last night) and requires to be disconnected from the mains for it to be reset. (anyone know of firmware upgrades? Nothing on the Ellion website...)

I used to be a software engineer. I`ve been a quality manager. I`ve been involved in the development and manufacture of consumer audio devices. And frankly, I`m not impressed so far.
