RE: DVD-R Compatible players??

the vcdhelp.com compatibility list is worth a look

RE: whats the best dvd with macro disable and multi region ?

I understand neither the Tosh or the Pioneer output NTSC > PAL 50 conversion. Only important if you want to run/copy Region 1 discs

Free CD-RW`s

Pop yourself over to Watford Tesco`s. They`ve wrongly priced the 10-pack Memorex CD-RW blanks up at CD-R price (£3.39 per pack instead of £13.99)

I took three packs to the checkout, but the Till had them as correct price. So was told by staff member to pay full price and go straight to the Customer Services desk and explain you`ve been overcharged. Hey presto! Tesco Pricing Policy - without checking the aisle, they refund all the cash, and let the packs go for free.

RE: DARREN

pjaxon

www.vcdhelp.com has a miniDVD test image you ca nburn to CD-R

to check PAL50 conversion from NTSC you could run a Region 1 disc through to a VCR with Macro-off. If it comes out recorded ok then it`s successful

RE: Review of Dansai 852 DVD player

Gidon

Can you put a grab up of the MP3 & MPG file screens?

Nice effort mate. Same as you, I found minimal support on my current player, so I`ve also put together a little effort on the MiCo models on the cheap, will post link when done

You might want to get together with this guy

RE: NEW XWAVE 1100..............MICO EATER ? ?

I know what you mean about `Fisher Price` ;) Same reason I didn`t want one, from first batch too

Questions remain:
will it play MiniDVD? vcdhelp.com doesn`t list 1100 model
play MPG as files?
does it output NTSC>PAL50

RE: Can anyone recommend a £110 or less DVD Player?

read it on another forum but have seen review on reviewcentre.com, so can`t confirm until a Technika owner posts a confirmation

If it is one it`s worth picking up instead as it looks better I think

RE: philips dvd recorders

Clayts, no worrries, sun was a bit hot last week for all of us :)
...wish it would come back tho`

VCDhelp.com compatibility list (as a reference) doesn`t list all players (current MiCo models are missing for starters) yet returns a count of 103 players that run all three formats -R, -RW, +RW.

Compatibility ratio
-RW : +RW is 200:193
-R/-RW : -R/+RW is 185:138

Just numbers, yes, but as an poll it can`t go unnoticed. +RW support isn`t anything like as limited as I was expecting. RAM compatibility is not listed (for now?).

Hmm.. dunno what to believe now. I read elsewhere that DVD Forum has no power to set standards. When the +RW Sony burner arrives I`ll be seeing for myself how bad +RW compatibility really is.

Cheers,

RE: Tesco Dansai 852 or Asda Pacific 750. Which is the best

Of the three, the Technika has the best facia, IMHO. Seen this facia on a shot of the MiCo L031R (...that`s if it really IS an 852 clone). A mate bought the Decca and finds the case a bit bulkier than expected.

This Technika is being given away with some mobile phone deals, see mobileshop.com

RE: Can anyone recommend a £110 or less DVD Player?

www.empiredirect.co.uk are still doing the (?) Dansai 852 clone (I`ve read that it is, also same region hack) under the name Technika DVD212 for £89.99

RE: MICO Clasica 20 Again!

No the Mico does not need to be chipped. The following was posted in the `Region Hacks` area of this site:

1. Make sure there is no DVD in the player`s tray.
2. Using the remote control, key in the following: 2, 9, 1, 8, Enter.
3. You should then be in the hidden menu, where you change the region on the first page, or use 13 for region free.
4. You can also disable Macrovision on the second page of the menu.

It`s identical hack to my MiCo Celo 80

RE: dvd recorder & cdr

Hmm... does this mean the HP list is wrong? Naughty... best drop Sharp & HP a line I guess! The Sharp 740 is the Sampo clone isn`t it?

Would this list they`ve posted be an `old` list tauted by the +RW alliance bods? Some of the other models, Sony for example, I recognise as old-line models.

The main thing that makes me turn away from the Pioneer is the problem of not being able to erase individual files, you have to erase the whole disk entirely before re-use. So for me it`s hardly a replacement for our venerable tapes, or even the TV Tuner > Firewire input connection to my DV cam.

Just put an order through at work for the Sony +RW burner. This writes onto CDRW too. Will post our findings. Has anybody bought Pioneer burner? Experiences?

RE: philips dvd recorders

Betaboy? That wasn`t fair.

The recent Pioneer CD deck now supports both SACD and DVD-audio, another format war in itself. So how can we say future standalone DVD players/recorders won`t have +RW/RAM support, especially with the richest software manufacturer on the planet now behind +RW/RAM? MS vs. Apple again. There is some time left to establish the winner, but it won`t be too long before we`ll want to ditch our `little` players and replace them with recorders.

We are bound to get more writers in our computers (HP/Philips CDRW units I understand are the biggest OEM sellers) and will want to use our unfinalised DVRW`s from computer room to living room and back. If I`ve got it right, -RW does not allow you to erase files, you have to wipe discs completely, so surely the anti-Philips ferver should go towards Pioneer`s -RW too?

Sony`s Betamax lost against JVC`s Inferior VHS system simply down to their tighter licencing, didn`t it?

So on the state of the first efforts released, are we saying the DV standard `primarily invented for only data storage`, RAM has won?

RE: philips dvd recorders

+RW isn`t dead yet!

http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-880122.html

"At its annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference ( WinHEC), Microsoft plans to demonstrate software and to provide technical documentation for incorporating the DVD+RW format into its Windows operating system, according to a Microsoft Web site detailing the schedule for the conference.

"This presentation explains how support for DVD+RW in Windows has been designed to become the standard storage solution for the PC and consumer electronics environments," reads the description of a presentation planned for next week`s show. Microsoft will be adding support for DVD+RW into a future version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, according to the site."

RE: Is the H & B DVD-5415S Multi-region DVD Player from amazon.co.uk any good?

Have you `searched` the Forum? You should find some answers

Decca 2110

Decca 2110:

Just to confirm the new stock just in at Powerhouse still lets you switch off Macrovision

Boo Hiss to MiCo ;)

The 2110 is the 5.1 output included model

MiCo owners

re: clayts message and mine above

got a MiCo?
http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/micosite

On there are shots from any of the MiCo range I could find, along with some reviews of the Clasica and Celo, but mainly the lid-off shots of my Celo for Clayts (sorry for the pants camera let me know if no good). you need to login to see full size images

dump any shots/scans you want in there, id celo80 pwd: beijing
mail docs/links to me here, rehcnumyentuhc[at]moc.liamtoh

I`m not gonna bother with any hosting until interest is gauged :) well it`s a start...

cheers Clayts!

RE: MiCo no macrovision disable.... What now ??

Clayts

Cheers for the offer

You`ve given me an idea, maybe to get the ball rolling :

I`ll dump the shots quickly onto one of the noddy Yahoo-type photo areas instead, giving Clasica owners the same place. Maybe if enough interest and a MiCo site may be in the offing one day :)

It`s a start..

Cheers

RE: MiCo no macrovision disable.... What now ??

cheers Clayts

Sampo owners seem well taken care of, the support area450 gives is superb

I`ve been hunting for similar to mess with my MiCo (Celo), but have found nothing. MiCo specific pages are non-existent, odd considering the 980(s) was out a coupla years ago now and that sold a few. Firmtweak site pays no mention to the firm MiCo. `C-Cube Beijing Team` I assume is the firmware author.

Is there any thing that we can do? Any way of pulling down the firmware tables (like I can with my Sony Cam) and starting from there? Don`t really wanna pull out eprom chips manually shown on area450...

Dunno. A bit green on this

RE: MiCo no macrovision disable.... What now ??

only Dansai 1010 are available down here in Watford, and appear to have been the only Dansai in there for a month now. Tesco `salesman` confirmed to me the 852 line has finished and the 1010 is the replacement. That`s what he said.

...also many of the 1010 have been returned with faults - mainly handset

RE: MiCo no macrovision disable.... What now ??

I guess the same goes for the Mac Master accessory, but that`s been on sale for ages. Maybe they only go for the player manufacturers..

I`ve only seen 2 magazine reviews for the Clasica, 3 for the Celo, but nothing for the Decca/Dansai models

Personally, I`d rather stay away from the cost and bother of extra leads/accessories (especially ones slated on this forum) if another cheapo player is available that does the trick and gets recommendations here.

A mate has ordered the Decca, I`ll get him to post what he thinks of it

Quick questions: does the Mac Master pass-through RGB ? Paull have you used one?

RE: MiCo no macrovision disable.... What now ??

This Mico firmware update is a surprise!

Phew - I ordered the Clasica 20 but bought the Celo 80 while waiting instead, on the strength of reviews and it`s full width dimensions.

Macro disable is the main reason I was after the 20, so glad I didn`t get one of these new batch. Multizonedvd.com are still doing the the Celo 80, macro-off choice still there

Looks like the Decca is now the one to go for, now the Dansai 852 line has finished..

RE: Decca DDV-5100

Have they replaced the DDV-2110 then? Does this mean it doesn`t have the two mic inputs on the facia, indicating a Karoake machine?

RE: S Video to Scart

How cheap is this setup you`re after? To be honest, I`d avoid any DVD kit that penny-pinched a SCART output, let alone an RGB-compatible SCART one

How old is the SCART telly? My ol`man`s Sony set is 7 years old yet it still has RGB, S-Video & Composite input via the SCARTs

There are plenty of models to choose from. Read a review or two and decide against the units that do not have RGB SCART

that`s my tuppence anyway
